Hamilton: "Monza zou onaantastbaar moeten zijn"

Monza hoort thuis op de Formule 1-kalender. Met die boodschap probeerde eerder Ferrari-rijder Sebastian Vettel Bernie Ecclestone ervan te doordringen dat het historische circuit niet van het schema mag verdwijnen en nu doet Mercedes-coureur Lewis Hamilton hetzelfde. Het contract van Monza om de Italiaanse Grand Prix te organiseren loopt na 2016 af.

Tuttosport citeert Hamilton: "Monza zou onaantastbaar moeten zijn. Je ziet dat Ferrari door de aderen van de fans stroomt, het zit in hun DNA. Het is alsof ze geboren worden met een Ferrari-shirt aan, zoals Superman en zijn pak. Het is belangrijk om dit soort historische locaties te koesteren, want waar historie is, is vaak ook passie."

Flavio Briatore, oud-teambaas en goed bevriend met Ecclestone, gelooft niet dat de Formule 1 Monza de rug toekeert. "Bernie kent het belang van Monza. Ik denk dat de Grand Prix tot in de lengte der dagen daar blijft. Historische races hebben meer waarde dan wat het direct financieel oplevert. Monza heeft meer aantrekkingskracht dan bijvoorbeeld Sepang."
