Technisch directeur Mercedes: "Hamilton werkt net zo hard als Rosberg"

Lewis Hamilton werkt net zo hard voor succes als zijn teamgenoot Nico Rosberg. Dat is de claim van Geoff Willis, technisch directeur van Mercedes. Willis reageert hiermee op de uitspraken van Bernie Ecclestone, die eerder verkondigde dat de extravagante levensstijl van de tweevoudig wereldkampioen uit de hand dreigt te lopen.

"Dankzij Facebook en Twitter lijkt het alsof hij een enorme playboy is", aldus Willis tegenover het Duitse Auto Bild. "Maar tussen de races door traint hij net zo intensief als Nico Rosberg. Lewis werkt ontzettend hard om zo goed te zijn als hij is."

Hamilton wordt regelmatig feestend gespot met verschillende wereldsterren, terwijl teamgenoot Rosberg onlangs vader is geworden van zijn eerste kind. Ondanks een verschillende levensstijl, wonen de Mercedes-coureurs in hetzelfde appartementencomplex in Monaco. Persoonlijk contact hebben de twee echter niet.

"Nee, totaal niet", antwoordt Rosberg op de vraag of hij Hamilton persoonlijk spreekt in zijn vrije tijd. "We hebben geen persoonlijk contact, onze levens zijn te verschillend. De wil om te slagen en onze ambitie om de beste te zijn, zijn nu te sterk. Ik begrijp dat en ik denk dat Lewis dat ook doet."

Dat Ecclestone vroeger zelf drinkende, rokende en feestende coureurs in zijn team had laat hij even achterwege.
Hamilton weet gerust wel wat hij doet. Anders kun je niet op dit niveau presteren.
