McLaren: "Wij willen dat Button na dit jaar blijft"

Het team van McLaren tracht Jenson Button ertoe te verleiden om zijn aflopende contract te verlengen. De Britse renstal zal de nodige overredingskracht nodig hebben, want de meeste signalen duiden op een naderend afscheid voor de wereldkampioen van 2009.

Niet als het aan McLaren-directeur Jonathan Neale ligt. "Er zijn veel discussies gaande met Jenson. Hij is een fantastische kerel, een wereldkampioen en behoort echt tot de familie bij McLaren-Honda. We houden het niet voor niets al zo lang met elkaar vol. We willen dat hij na dit jaar blijft en we hebben allemaal een zwak voor hem."

"Aan de andere kant, als een coureur niet een stoeltje bij ons wil bemannen, dan hebben we dat maar te respecteren. Ik hoop dat we genoeg gedaan hebben om de onderhandelingen voort te zetten en het vertrouwen in ons te herstellen zodat hij zijn contract bij ons verlengt. Dat is ons uitgangspunt."

    Brundle was er vanoochtend glashelder over, geen enkel team houdt een rijder tegen die wenst te stoppen. Herbert was het met em eens en ik denk dat deze twee oud-coureurs beter weten hoe een team met seniordrivers omgaan dan de gemiddelde journalist, zij hebben het meegemaakt en weten precies wat er wel achter de schermen gebeurd en wat er dan buiten de schermen gebracht wordt.

    Dus McLaren geeft aan Jensen tuurlijk mag je blijven, als je je salarisverlaging maar accepteert, als je gratis wilt rijden voor ons helemaal goed

      Ze moeten nodig met stoffel en blik door die garage. Maar ik zou Button nog even niet opvegen en wegdoen. Ervaring en snelheid is belangrijker dan alleen snelheid op dit moment.

    Voor McLaren is het het beste als ze zoveel mogelijk ervaring aanhouden op dit moment. Button brengt enorm veel ervaring mee om feedback te geven op de ontwikkeling van een auto. Daarnaast is het een coureur die zó constant is, dat je er enorm veel punten voor het constructeurskampioenschap mee kan oprapen. Alonso kan met iedere auto overweg en draagt daardoor minder bij aan de ontwikkling, maar is wel retesnel en een racer purs sang. Als je Vandoorne naast Alonso stalt met een auto zoals die nu is, dan zie ik McLaren-Honda niet veel beter worden.

    McLaren is erbij gebaat door te gaan met Alonso & Button, zeker als Honda gedurende de winter die motor update. Wat dat betreft is denk ik ook Button erbij gebaat nog een jaar door te gaan en zijn F1-carriere af te sluiten met een paar successen in plaats van met een rampseizoen als deze. Een coureur met zijn staat van dienst zou zo niet de sport moeten verlaten.

    Hier spreekt dat McLaren verder door wilt met Button, maar wordt niet over geld gesproken. In jet contract staat dat Button na dit seizoen een flinke opwaardering krijgt indien hij door gaat. Waarschijnlijk wilt McLaren minder bieden waarfoor Button nog twijfelt.
