Ecclestone: “Gesloten cockpit zal nooit een optie worden voor F1”

Bernie Ecclestone heeft te kennen gegeven niets te voelen voor een gesloten cockpit bij Formule 1-auto’s. Wat hem betreft blijft de Formule 1 altijd race met een open cockpit.

De discussie over gesloten cockpits is de laatste tijd veel aan bod. Vooral na de recentelijke dodelijke crashes van Jules Bianchi en Justin Wilson, maar ook al na de crash van Felipe Massa en het dodelijke ongeval van Henry Surtees enkele jaren geleden. Ook afgelopen weekend kwam de discussie weer tot leven, nadat Carlos Sainz Jr. tijdens zijn crash in de derde vrije training volledig onder de bandenstapels terecht kwam.

Op de vraag of Bernie Ecclestone het nu niet tijd vindt voor gesloten cockpits is de Formule 1-baas duidelijk: “Nee de Formule 1 zal nooit met een gesloten cockpit rijden. Deze klasse is groot geworden omdat het een open raceklasse is. En dat moet je in ere houden.”

“De Formule 1 en het autoracen in het algemeen is nu eenmaal een gevaarlijke sport. Dat weet iedere coureur die ervoor kiest dit beroep te gaan doen. Niemand hoopt natuurlijk op een dodelijk ongeval of dat iemand gewond raakt, maar de mensen houden van de hoge risico factoren. Autosport is gevaarlijk! Niemand wil iemand zien verongelukken, maar die dingen gebeuren soms, hoe triest dan ook, nu eenmaal”, aldus Ecclestone.

    Ik begin weer aardig Bernie-fan te worden. De verkoop aan CVC vergeef ik hem nooit maar buiten dat is hij degene die de F1 weer de juiste kant op wil brengen. Van Jean Todt met zijn FIA hoef je niets te verwachten helaas.

      Die Jean Todt is idd een waardeloos figuur. In iedergeval in de functie die hij nu bekleed.

      Jean Todt heeft de houding aangenomen: "Willen jullie praten over de toekomst van de Formule 1, kom maar naar ons toe." Die is wijs genoeg dat in de huidige machtsverhouding en staat van de F1 weinig valt uit te halen en houd zich volledig afzijdig en dit is misschien wel het verstandigste wat hij kan doen.

      Waardeloos is die niet in deze functie, het enige is dat, hij alleen, daar geen vinger in de pap heeft waar de Strategy-Group en CVC de absolute beslissingsmacht hebben kan de FIA enkel dit bezegelen in de mate van het "wettelijke toegelaten" binnen de FIA regels en daarbij blijft de functie van deze laatste. Vroeger had de FIA daar meer in te vertellen maar dit is reeds VVT

    Prima Bernie, de rede dat Sainz zo diep de bandenstapels inging had dan ook meer met die lage neus te maken en het feit dat zijn linkervoorkant al kapot was. Die neus heeft die tecpro barrier gewoon opgetild.

    Best interessant om te zien dat ze (de FIA) die neuzen omlaag wilde hebben ivm een aanrijding tussen 2 auto's, maar geen rekening gehouden hebben met deze vorm van impactopvang. Met een hoge(re) neus was er minder aan de hand geweest vermoedelijk.

      lage / hoge neuzen brengen beide weer verschillende risico's idd, de lage neuzen vind ik zelf persoonlijk iets mooier.

      Ja, dat is inderdaad weer zo'n FIA maatregel welke in paniek genomen lijkt en waar we nu al een paar keer van hebben gezien dat zodra er een wiel van een F1 afklapt het volstrekt logische gebeurt; ze hebben de neiging overal onderdoor te schieten. Mijn boerenverstand zegt dat je dit vrij makkelijk kunt ondervangen door een mechanisch systeem onder de auto te monteren welke de neus omhoog drukt zodra sensoren registreren dat er 1 of beide voorwielen af donderen. Soort airbag lift systeem, met de reactietijd heeft het voor het stuur geen zin, maar tussen moment van afbreken wielen en impact zit toch altijd wel een halve seconde of meer.

    Ben het hier volledig mee eens. Wanneer formule auto's met gesloten cockpits gaan rijden zijn het voor mij geen echte formule wagens meer.

    Toch maakt Bernie de regels niet. Als de FIA zegt dat er gesloten cockpits komen, dan komen die er ook.

    Verder denk ik niet dat het zo'n vaart zal lopen. En bovendien is het kortzichtig om elke keer deze discussie van stal te moeten halen als er een ongeval is waarbij hoofdletsel het resultaat is. Het is en blijft een risico van het vak en het moet simpelweg geaccepteerd worden dat dit kan gebeuren. De rijders nemen elke keer als zij instappen dit risico en dat weten zij ook. Als er dan ook een discussie over gesloten cockpits op gang moet worden gebracht, dan zijn de rijders de enigen die dit moeten starten in mijn ogen. De rest van de pers en personen met een mening moet maar leren dit te accepteren.

    Vind het niks bijzonders wat hier wordt gezegd, hoezo dankjewel roepen? het is gewoon common sense. Bovendien 90% van de fans is tegen. Hen nog meer tegen de haren instrijken kan F1 er echt niet bij hebben.
    Misschien ook zinvol om er even op te wijzen dat cockpits al voor driekwart gesloten zijn. Vergelijk de huidige auto's eens met de Brabham BT55.
