Topman CVC noemt F1 een 'fantastisch product'

De spectaculaire Grand Prix van de Verenigde Staten van afgelopen zondag demonstreert dat de Formule 1 nog altijd een fantastisch product is. Die boodschap draagt Donald Mackenzie van investeringsmaatschappij CVC Capital, dat de rechten voor de Formule 1 beheert, uit. Wellicht een tactiek om de prijs voor partijen met interesse in die rechten op te drijven.

Mackenzie liet aan Motorsport.com weten: "Het was een briljante race in Austin, nietwaar? Dat zie je wel vaker wanneer het regent. Ik was blij voor Lewis en voor alle fans. Ik was helemaal uit Engeland gekomen en de angst bestond dat het niet door zou gaan. Het was mooi dat de weersomstandigheden het toelieten om te racen en het werd een geweldige wedstrijd!"

"Het toont ook aan dat de Formule 1 met de juiste ingrediënten nog steeds fantastisch is. Close racing. Red Bull Racing speelde ondanks een tekort aan vermogen een rol van betekenis door de downforce die hun auto produceert. Dat duurde totdat de slicks gemonteerd werden."

Mackenzie weersprak dat CVC actief op zoek is naar een koper voor de rechten voor de Formule 1. "We voelen ons niet verplicht om de aandelen te verkopen. Bernie Ecclestone roept wel vaker wat. Het is onwaarschijnlijk dat wij hier voor altijd zullen zijn, maar we zijn niet genoodzaakt om nu onze rechten in de verkoop te gooien."

    Vroeger (noem een decenia) was het 'vanzelfsprekend' dat de F1 een fantastisch product was. Nu moet het persé gezegd worden, wat ik juist triest vindt, alsof er helemaal niks ontbreekt aan de huidige F1. De essentiele ingredienten ontbreken die er vroeger wel waren.

      Ik wil niet al te veel als de historische betweter overkomen, maar ik kan me nog goed discussies in de periode 2002 t/m 2005 voor de geest halen. De sport was volgens iedereen "dood". Ferrari domineerde alles. Ze overwogen in 2002 zelfs strafgewichten om de sport spannender te maken. In 2002 was er zelfs het idee om coureurs per race van auto te laten wisselen. Schumacher in een Minardi. Alex Young in een Ferrari.

      In 2005 was er bakken met kritiek op de regel dat je banden 1 race mee moesten. In dat jaar ook de meest grote farce die ik ooit in de F1 heb mee gemaakt. De GP van Amerika met 6 auto's.

      In 1994 drong Bernie Ecclestone hard bij Mansell aan om terug te keren. De sport miste karakters en daardoor moest Nigel terug komen. Ook in 2005 had je vaak de verhalen. Vroeger was het allemaal beter.

      Na de GP van Canada heb ik alleen maar mooie races gezien. Vooral de laatste 3 a 4 GP waren pareltjes. Ook onder droge omstandigheden. Ik kijk 15 jaar Formule 1 en ik herken de verhalen niet dat het vroeger spannender waren. We klagen nu keihard dat Hamilton eind Oktober kampioen was. Schumacher was in 2002 in Juli( !!!) kampioen.

      De sport is niet perfect en volmaakt, maar het is niet zo dat het saaier is als ooit. Misschien voor de fans die sinds 2013 kijken ofzo. Maar als je seizoenen als 2001,2002, 2004 hebt meegemaakt is dit seizoen niet saai.

      @Insure, helemaal mee eens. Maar wat ik graag zou willen is de 80e jaren zonder al het politieke poespas. Een startveld met daarin Williams, Brabham, Lotus, Renault, Ferrari, McLaren, Alfa-Romeo, en vele andere. Dat is toch geweldig? Elke race een loterij zoals in de seizoenen van 1982 en 1983. Daar zou ik echt direct voor tekenen als dat weer mogelijk was.

    Ja natuurlijk zegt CVC dat F1 een fantastisch product is. Als men laat blijken dat ze het willen verkopen, verlaagd dat de waarde. Ze zeggen gewoon blij te zijn met het product, en wie het wil hebben moet dus met een bijzonder bod komen.

    Overigens heeft CVC een flink aandeel in de daling van kijkcijfers en nieuwe fans. Ze dragen Ecclestone op een X bedrag uit de TV rechten te slepen en er een stijgende lijn in te houden, waarop Ecclestone op zeker moment genoodzaakt is om de F1 TV rechten in steeds meer landen aan decoderzenders te verkopen. Ecclestone is sinds dat CVC de rechten heeft in dienst van CVC, een koppige marionet, maar een marionet.

    CVC heeft haar focus op het zoveel mogelijk geld halen in een zo kort mogelijke tijd. Wanneer de koe minder melk gaat geven omdat ze te uitgemelkt raakt, gooit het F1 in de verkoop. En dat gebeurd nu, mede door de instabiliteit van de sport door de te hoge kosten en te lage entertainment gehalte door gebrek aan mooie auto's en mooi motorlawaai, en deels door eigen toedoen, de melkkoe begint eerste tekenen van uitdroging te vertonen, en wil een goede prijs om de koe over te dragen aan een nieuwe melker, die wellicht nog harder moet melken om de restjes eruit te halen. Ecclestone ziet zijn kans schoon om in de volgende deal weer winst te vinden voor F1 en zichzelf, en zoals hij zo vaak doet gooit een knuppel in het hoenderhok, om dingen op gang te helpen. CVC ontkent het vervolgens om de prijs hoog te houden, maar ondertussen zijn de dingen in gang gezet.

    Het zou goed zijn dat Ecclestone samen met een investeerder die de juiste visie heeft voor een vruchtbare toekomst van de sport, de rechten terug koopt, en de koe weer gezonder maakt, en niet meer roekeloos wordt uitgemolken, zonder te letten op de gezondheid, zodat het nog lang leeft.
