FIA bevestigt gridstraf van tien plaatsen voor Ricciardo

Daniel Ricciardo maakte gisteren voor het eerst kennis met de verbeterde Renault-motor. De Australiër reed er probleemloos zijn rondjes mee tijdens de vrije trainingen op het Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace. De motorwissel levert Ricciardo wel een gridstraf op van tien plaatsen, aangezien het de achtste motor is die achterin de RB11 gemonteerd wordt.

De gridstraf stond voor dit weekend al vast, aangezien Red Bull toen al de keuze had gemaakt om de nieuwe motor in te gaan zetten. De FIA bevestigt dergelijke straffen echter wel altijd via een officieel bericht. Ricciardo liet na de vrijdagtrainingen weten dat de motor qua vermogen geen hele grote stap vooruit is en dat hij mikt op een plek bij de eerste vijf in de kwalificatie en race.

Ricciardo is overigens de enige coureur die gebruik maakt van de verbeterde Renault-motor. Teamgenoot Daniil Kvyat rijdt met de oude specificatie terwijl Toro Rosso eerder al liet weten niet de nieuwe motor te zullen gaan rijden om gridstraffen te voorkomen en een zo goed mogelijke kans te hebben de zesde plek van Lotus bij de constructeurs over te nemen.
