Williams neemt Stroll definitief over van Ferrari

Lance Stroll vervolgt zijn loopbaan als ontwikkelingscoureur van Williams. Dat heeft de Britse renstal bevestigt. Het gerucht dat de jonge Canadees de overstap zou maken van de Ferrari Driver Academy naar de opleiding van Williams ging al langer en nu is dan eindelijk de kogel door de kerk.

Williams heeft met de 17-jarige Stroll, die dit jaar in het Europees kampioenschap Formule 3 actief was, een soortgelijk traject als met Valtteri Bottas voor ogen. Eerst wat jaren in de luwte ontwikkelen om vervolgens door te stoten naar een stoeltje in de Formule 1.

Stroll: "Ik ben vereerd om onderdeel uit te gaan maken van een geweldig team als Williams, een renstal met veel historie en successen. Ik kan niet wachten om te beginnen met de samenwerking en hoop dat we samen mooie dingen kunnen presteren in de komende jaren."

"Het is een opwindende en cruciale periode in mijn relatief korte loopbaan tot nu toe. De Formule 1 bereiken is altijd mijn ultieme doel geweest. Ik ben Ferrari dankbaar voor de steun in de afgelopen jaren. Ze hebben me enorm geholpen, maar nu is het tijd voor een nieuw hoofdstuk."
