VT2: Perez beste van de rest achter Mercedessen

Mercedes-coureurs Nico Rosberg en Lewis Hamilton hebben de rollen omgedraaid voor de tweede vrije training voor de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi. In deze sessie was Rosberg de snellere van de twee, een dikke tiende voor Hamilton. Force India-coureur Sergio Perez was beste van de rest op plek drie. De Mexicaan gaf ruim zes tienden toe op Rosberg.

De training eindige wel voortijdig voor Perez, hij moest zijn laatste run afbreken omdat zijn remmen te heet werden. Veel groter waren de problemen voor Carlos Sainz. Hij moest zijn Toro Rosso aan de kant zetten in bocht 7. De Spanjaard eindigde mede daardoor opnieuw onder Max Verstappen. Het verschil tussen beiden bedroeg bijna twee tienden.

Sebastian Vettel begon opmerkelijk aan deze sessie. In zijn eerste run zong hij over de boordradio 'Happy Birthday' voor zijn engineer Riccardo Adami, die vandaag jarig is. Vettel was een van de rijders die in bocht 1 even te wijd gingen. Daniil Kvyat en Roberto Merhi hadden ook de uitloopstrook aan de buitenkant van bocht 1 nodig om hun weg te vervolgen.
