Bandenfabrikant Hankook aast op toekomst in de Formule 1

Pirelli volgt vanaf 2011 zo goed als zeker Bridgestone op als officiële bandenleverancier van de Formule 1. De Italiaanse bandenfabrikant heeft alleen nog concurrentie van Michelin. Het Zuid-Koreaanse Hankook toonde ook interesse om de positie van Bridgestone over te nemen, maar haakte na een eerste gesprek met Bernie Ecclestone toch af.

Ze laten zich daardoor niet uit het lood slaan, over een paar jaar doen ze gewoon een nieuwe poging. Hyan Bum Cho, vice-president van Hankook, deelde aan de Sydney Morning Herald mede: Op dit moment hebben we een klein Le Mans-team en wat rallyteams hier en daar, we proberen autosportbanden te verkopen. In de toekomst willen we een groot marktaandeel in dit segment. Het is vrij winstgevend, maar om als merk volledig te profiteren van autosport moet je deelnemen aan het WRC, de 24 uur van Le Mans of de Formule 1. Het is het doel om in de toekomst daar onderdeel van uit te maken. Dat gaat veel geld kosten aan ontwikkelingen en investeringen.

Het is waarschijnlijk bekend dat het meneer Ecclestone veel moeite kost om een nieuwe bandenleverancier voor 2011 te vinden. Ik heb persoonlijk met hem gesproken, maar we hebben besloten om het programma niet door te zetten. Hij had heel snel een band nodig en die konden wij niet zo snel prepareren. Maar het was een goed gesprek en misschien wagen we bij de volgende termijn een nieuwe poging, of bij een andere termijn in de toekomst.
