Symonds: "Reglementen voor 2017 grotere uitdaging dan in 2009"

In 2017 gaan de Formule 1-reglementen drastisch op de schop. De sport zit in een neerwaartse spiraal en met snellere en aggressievere wagens moet het voor de fans weer genieten worden. Volgens de technisch directeur van Williams, Pat Symonds, worden de nieuwe regels een grotere uitdaging dan de laatste grote reglementswijziging op aerodynamisch vlak in 2009.

De wagens voor 2017 moeten ontwikkelt worden met een gelimiteerd aantal uren in de windtunnel en minder personeel. In 2009 waren de teams nog onbeperkt in de hoeveelheid tijd en mankracht dat in de ontwikkeling van de wagens werd gestoken. Volgens Symonds wordt het interessant om te zien in 2016 hoe de teams de aandacht gaan verleggen naar 2017.

"Het gaat mensen als mij volgend jaar zeker hoofdbrekens bezorgen. Het is een stuk lastiger dan in 2009. Nu zul je in het seizoen al een balans moeten gaan vinden in de doorontwikkeling van de huidige bolide en het ontwerpen en ontwikkelen van de auto voor 2017. Het wordt een enorme uitdaging voor de teams", aldus Symonds.

Een voordeel van de nieuwe regels is wel dat trucjes zoals Honda ze toepaste in 2008 niet meer werken. Honda koos er toen voor om het seizoen 2008 op te geven na een paar races en kwam in 2009 met een ijzersterke bolide in de start. Het team, dat toen als Brawn door het leven ging, had een dubbele diffuser gebouwd en dat zorgde in de eerste seizoenshelft voor een enorme voorsprong op de concurrentie. Mede hierdoor won Brawn het kampioenschap.

"Ik denk dat de nieuwe manier van werken aan de voorbereiding op 2017 er niet voor gaat zorgen dat iemand opeens mijlen ver voor ligt. Het enige waar een team het op zou kunnen winnen is een creatie dat niemand anders heeft. Dit kost echter ook veel tijd en door de restricties in de ontwikkeling is dat een stuk lastiger. Voor Williams zijn de regelwijzigingen een kans. In 2009 draaiden we ook een goed seizoen met de nieuwe regels", aldus Symonds.

Geef red bull een merc motor en je krijgt een spannend seizoen , hoe moeilijk kan het wezen verplicht de deelnemende motor fabrikanten dat ze altijd een motor moeten leveren ,aan iedereen die er om vraagt en betaald dan kunnen de teams makkelijker switzen van fabriekant. Nu bouwt merc de beste motor dus wil iedereen die hebben maar dat gebeurd niet omdat ze zelf mogen bepalen wie hun motor krijgt ,ze houden de anderen bewust klein en dat is slecht voor de sport . Dit is volgens mij echt de goedkoopste oplossing en je krijgt meer gelijkwaardige strijd.

  Het probleem ligt er niet in dat mercedes en ferrari geen competetive motor aan te grote concurenten willen geven (dat vind ik logisch en zou niemand doen). Het probleem ligt er in dat de huidige motoren te complex zijn om in te stappen als nieuwe motorleverancier. Heel de wereld ziet het gestuntel van Renault en Honda. Zou het nog het V10/V8 tijdperk zijn (niet kwa geluid/vermogen/rpm etc, maar kwa simplicity van de motoren). Dan zou er "gewoon" een nieuwe motorleverancier even wat F1 motoren in elkaar knutselen (denk aan ford/vw/bmw/toyota etc.) en dan zou met die "redelijk" competatieve motor Red Bull gewoon mee kunnen doen voor de overwinningen zonder gelijk overdominant te zijn. Een red bull met een mercedes motor is volgens mij gewoon 1 seconden sneller als een mercedes met een mercedes motor. Dus dat gaat er NOOIT van komen.
