Boullier: "Super Formula goede voorbereiding voor Vandoorne"

Onze zuiderbuur Stoffel Vandoorne werd in 2015 op dominante wijze kampioen in de GP2. De Belg, die uitkwam voor het team van ART Grand Prix, combineerde zijn rol in de GP2 met een reserverol bij het Formule 1-team van McLaren. Regelmatig stroomde een GP2-kampioen rechtstreeks door naar de Formule 1, volgend seizoen zal Vandoorne zijn activiteiten bij McLaren combineren met een stoeltje in de Japanse Super Formula. Eric Boullier denkt dat racen in Japan een goede voorbereiding is voor Vandoorne op een Formule 1-debuut.

Omdat Jenson Button en Fernando Alonso volgend jaar ook voor McLaren racen had het team geen ruimte om Vandoorne te stallen. De kansen bij andere renstallen waren beperkt. McLaren wilde echter voorkomen dat Vandoorne hetzelfde overkomt als Kevin Magnussen, die na een jaar racen bij McLaren vorig jaar reserverijder was maar niet in een competitieve klasse racete. Magnussen werd eerder dit jaar bekdankt voor zijn diensten.

Boullier over de gecombineerde rol van Vandoorne: "We wilden Stoffel voor komend seizoen behouden, maar tegelijkertijd willen we dat hij in een competitie actief is. Dit houdt hem scherp en fit. De Super Formula is een ideale voorbereiding op de Formule 1: de auto's hebben veel grip. Het is goed dat hij zijn activiteiten volgend jaar combineert met het rijden van races."

Boullier geeft verder aan onder de indruk te zijn van het werk dat Vandoorne tot dusver heeft geleverd. Tijdens een testsessie met de Super Formula op het circuit van Suzuka kende Vandoorne een paar problemen, maar Boullier is desondanks tevreden: "De testsessie is positief verlopen. Helaas waren er wat motorproblemen, waardoor hij zijn rondjes voornamelijk in de regen reed. De tijden die hij op een droge baan had gereden waren niet representatief. In de regen kon hij echter met de beste mee."

Toch begrijp ik niet dat zo een coureur nog niet in de F1 rijdt. Ik denk dat hij het zeker niet slechter dan Button had gedaan, misschien zelfs wel beter. Button is een aardige gast, maar mag van mij plaats maken voor Vandoorne.

  Dat is het risico als je jezelf aan een team bindt door in een opleidingstraject te zitten; je enige mogelijkheid is dat je debuteert bij het team waar jij jezelf aan gebonden hebt. En als dat team vol zit, dan is het spijtig maar dan wordt je in de wachtkamer gezet. Zie Magnussen.
  
  En bovendien is het nu wel duidelijk dat Stoffel een soort van kennismaking met Japan krijgt in voorbereiding als HET komende talent wat in een Honda aangedreven Formule 1 auto gaat rijden. Dus marketingtechnisch is het niet een hele slechte zet om in Japan te gaan rijden. Neemt niet weg dat hij gewoon had moeten debuteren dit jaar. Desnoods bij een Lotus/Renault of Manor. Toen duidelijk was dat hij kampioen werd, was er nog plek bij Lotus.

Volgens mij heeft deze jongen al genoeg voorbereiding gehad !.... en was een stoeltje in f1 2016 ,meer dan verdiend Meneer Boullier !... pff..
