Dakar: Tim Coronel begon bijna te hallucineren

Tim Coronel heeft ook de 2de helft van de marathon etappe succesvol afgesloten. Op de loodzware klassementsproef in Bolivia liet Coronel een mooie 53ste tijd noteren met de Maxxis Dakar Buggy. Tom Coronel was tot gisteravond laat in touw om naar het bivak te komen. Vrij snel na de start van de etappe was het voorbij voor Tom en werd hem verteld dat de organisatie hem op zou pikken, maar nadat alle deelnemers voorbij waren gekomen gebeurde er nog steeds niets. "Ik heb heel lang alleen staan wachten op hulp, maar dat kwam er maar niet. Uiteindelijk ben ik teruggebracht naar de start en was ik 's avonds laat pas in het bivak."

Tom Coronel werd naar het bivak gebracht, maar de Buggy niet. Een oude bekende van Tom zorgde voor een passende oplossing. "De Buggy staat bij een local in de garage totdat we hem naar het bivak in Salta kunnen brengen. Ik kwam hem tegen toen ik stil stond in de bergen en daar heeft hij mij geholpen. Ik heb hem toen mijn handschoenen gegeven en hij gaf mij zijn telefoonnummer. Ik heb hem gebeld en hij heeft me naar zijn huis gesleept. Daar blijft de Buggy twee dagen totdat we hem naar het bivak in Salta kunnen brengen", aldus Tom.

Na een lastige start van Dakar begint Tim Corone laardig in zijn ritme te komen. De Maxxis Dakar Buggy met startnummer 347 gaf de afgelopen dagen geen krimp en Tim liet ook in de vijfde etappe prima tijden noteren. Er mocht aan de vooravond niet aan de Buggy gesleuteld worden, maar ook dat bleek weinig problemen op te leveren. De etappe van vandaag was mooi, maar op meerdere vlakken erg tricky. Niet alleen de hoogte, 4.600 meter, maar ook de smalle paadjes en diepe ravijnen maakten het rijden uitdagend.

"De etappe verliep best aardig", vertelde Tim bij aankomst in het bivak. "Ik heb me nog een beetje ingehouden. Zeker op de lange stukken heeft het geen zin om vol te trappen. De etappe was mooi, maar erg hoog! Ik heb er niet zo snel last van, maar nu begon ik bijna te hallucineren onderweg. Ik voelde hagelstenen op mijn neus en dacht dat ik gek werd, maar het hagelde echt. De Buggy heeft zich de afgelopen twee dagen goed gehouden en ik krijg steeds meer vertrouwen. Ik ben blij met de nieuwe Maxxis-banden want die hebben mij nog geen moment in de steek gelaten. Ik zag veel snelle jongens die met lekke banden stonden, maar ik kon gewoon door hobbelen. Ik baal van de situatie met Tommy, maar ik moet doorrijden van hem en dat gaan we doen ook. That's Dakar!"
