Dakar: Al-Attiyah wint achtste etappe in zijn Mini, Loeb crasht

De start van de tweede Dakar-week kende een grote verandering. Nasser Al-Attiyah doorbrak de dominantie van Peugeot en won de achtste etappe in zijn Mini. Al-Attiyah, de regerend Dakar-kampioen, was slechts 12 seconden sneller dan Carlos Sainz in de Peugeot 2008 DKR. Stéphane Peterhansel had een slechte start van de etappe. De Fransman liep een lekke band op en verloor hierdoor ruim zes minuten. Peterhansel maakte veel goed in de duinen, en eindigde slechts 31 seconden achter de dagwinnaar Al-Attiyah.

In de eerste week leek Sebastien Loeb nog de gedoodverfde winnaar van de Dakar Rally 2016. Maar door de achtste etappe zijn zijn kansen verkeken. De negenvoudig WRC-kampioen verloor vroeg in de etappe al ruim acht minuten doordat hij vast kwam te zitten in het zand. Na 500 kilometer ging het voor de Fransman pas echt goed mis. Loeb sloeg over de kop met zijn Peugeot 2008 DKR, maar gelukkig bleven beide inzittenden ongedeerd. Met moeite kon Loeb de etappe nog uitrijden maar zijn achterstand bedroeg meer dan een uur.

In het algemeen klassement is Loeb niet meer de leider. Peterhansel heeft die koppositie overgenomen, met teamgenoot Carlos Sainz op 2 minuten en 9 seconden achter de Fransman. Al-attiyah komt een kwartier te kort en bezet de derde plaats in de tussenstand.

Eerste echt "dakar" etappe en een crash voor Loeb. Mooie leerschool wel ;-)
Volgend jaar terug, en dan voor de winst!

Is er al wat bekend over een straf voor Peterhansel? Het wordt ineens terug spannend voor de Peugeots!

Peterhansel wordt toch nooit gestraft ;) Die kan motards omver rijden in rivieren en de jury doet niks. Schijnbaar had JP Cottret (Peter's copiloot) een shortcut gevonden in het parcours. Maar de voorsprong is niet zo groot inderdaad, maar 2 minuten op Sainz. Als het terrein minder snel wordt kunnen de Mini's terugkomen op koppel en acceleratie, maar op topspeed is de DKR buggy te snel
