Dakar: Erik van Loon tweede in bloedhete ingekorte negende etappe

Erik van Loon heeft samen met zijn navigator Wouter Rosegaar zijn beste dagklassering ooit gepakt in de Dakar Rally. De Nederlander kwam als tweede over de finish, achter Peugeot-coureur Carlos Sainz. De negende etappe is vandaag ingekort doordat het bloedheet is geworden in Bélen en daardoor te zwaar voor de deelnemers.

Carlos Sainz was de sterkste vandaag, maar van Loon hield ondanks de hoge temperaturen zijn hoofd goed koel. De Nederlander moest slechts tien seconden toegeven op Sainz. Van Loon is door zijn topprestatie geklommen naar een achtste plaats in het algemeen klassement. Klassementsleider Stéphane Peterhansel kende een zware dag. De Fransman verloor door meerdere lekke banden veel tijd en kwam pas als zevende over de finish. Peterhansel is nog wel steeds de leider in het algemeen klassement maar Carlos Sainz heeft zijn achterstand ingekort tot slechts 2 minuten.

Naast van Loon heeft Tim Coronel ook een topprestatie geleverd vandaag tijdens de negende etappe. Coronel kwam als 16e over de finish in Bélen en wist daardoor zijn beste resultaat ooit te pakken in de Dakar Rally. De Nederlander rijdt solo in een buggy.
