Motorproblemen treffen McLaren in Paul Ricard

De McLaren MP4-30 neemt afscheid in stijl. Ook bij de laatste officiële testsessie van de door Honda aangedreven bolide uit 2015 kampt de auto met betrouwbaarheidsproblemen. Doordat de motor kuren vertoonde moest Stoffel Vandoorne het programma gisteren voortijdig afbreken.

Vandoorne legt uit: "We hadden een motorprobleem. Het team vroeg me om de auto stil te zetten, dat was het einde van ons programma. Alle teams gebruiken deze week motoren van vorig jaar. Ik weet niet hoeveel kilometers deze krachtbron al had gemaakt. We waren toch al van plan om de motor vannacht te verwisselen, helaas ging de aandrijflijn aan het einde van de dag nog stuk."

Over de geteste regenbanden zegt de Belg: "We hebben verscheidene specificaties uitgeprobeerd en die voelden allemaal ongeveer hetzelfde aan. Het is een 'blinde' test, we weten dus niet exact wat we testen. Het draait allemaal om informatie geven over hoe de banden reageren en Pirelli heeft het goed gedaan. Sommige specificaties waren beter dan andere, maar dat is logisch bij een test."

Volgens mij heeft Ferrari nooit een V6 "size-zero" motor gehad. Volgens mij is die motor al vanaf het begin de grootste en de zwaarste. Mercedes heeft de turbo en compressor gesplits om o.a. de motor zo compact mogelijk te houden...

    Ik ben echt benieuwd naar hun 2016 motor. Ze blijven echt aan size-zero concept vasthouden en het zou reuze knap zijn als ze daarmee een competitieve motor kunnen maken. Maar ik ben bang dat ze het toch aan het verkeerde eind hebben gezien de stap die Ferrari maakte toen ze dat zelfde concept loslieten.

      Dat size-zero is echt niet het probleem. Begin 2015 werden bepaalde cylinders te warm, niet de hele powerunit. Dat werd snel opgelost.

      Het vergroten van de turbo zodat de ERS problemen opgelost worden, zou een probleem zijn voor het size-zero concept maar, Honda zegt dat ze het blok aangepast hebben voor meer ruimte tussen de V zodat de grotere turbo er nog steeds tussen past.

      Ik vraag me nog het meest af of Honda nu afstapt van de axial flow compressor en nu eindelijk een split turbo toepast (vergroting zou er wel op kunnen duiden)

    Wanneer Honda er niet in slaagt om samen met McLaren succesvol te zijn komend seizoen, kan het wel eens exit zijn voor Honda in de F1. De Japanners gaan echt niet lang gezichtsverlies hebben!

      Wat versta jij onder succesvol?
      Zeges, podiums of meestrijden in het middenveld?
      Ik kan mij niet voorstellen dat Honda na twee jaar, en enorme investeringen, de handdoek in de ring gaat gooien als het nog niet echt gaat komend seizoen.
      Ik verwacht dat Honda een flinke stap gaat maken, en dat ze aansluiting gaan krijgen in de subtop.

      Ze zullen het nu toch minimaal 4-5 jaar willen volhouden. De laatste keer als Honda Racing duurde van 2006 t/m 2008 en vervolgens won Button in 2009 onder Brawn GP zijn wereldtitel. Dat zal in Tokyo toch een beetje zeer hebben gedaan.

      het levert meer gezichtsverlies op om er al na twee jaar uit te stappen. Laat Honda maar schuiven, dat komt echt wel goed. Ten tijde van BAR Honda werd er volledig ingezet op de veranderingen voor 2009, dit betaalde zich achteraf ook uit met een wereldtitel. De reden dat Honda eruit stapte was de financiële crisis, het is dan moeilijk uit te leggen aan je werknemers dat je 400 miljoen per jaar investeert maar er tegelijkertijd wordt gesneden in bijvoorbeeld de loonkosten.

      Ik denk dat HONDAMP4/4 een heel goed punt heeft, ik heb met mijn werk ook geregelt met japanse bedrijven te maken, en bij problemen lijken ze net bullterriers, bijten zich vast in een probleem gedreven om een oplossing te vinden.
      Het moet echt een bijzondere reden zijn willen ze de brui er aan geven.
      Althans zo is mijn ervaring met Japanse bedrijven, en ik vermoed Honda net zo werkt.

    Voor de mensen die nog twijfelen aan Honda. Die gasten gaan ervoor. Die weten waar het probleem zit en die gasten lossen dat op. Ik zie ze dit seizoen geregeld in de punten rijden en dicht naderen bij een podiumplaats. Let wel, ze gaan geen GP winnen. Maar in vergelijking met vorig seizoen maken ze een reuze sprong.
