Prost beroofde Sarrazin van kans in de Formule 1

Stéphane Sarrazin is momenteel actief in de Formule E, maar er was een tijd dat hij voorbestemd leek voor een carrière in de Formule 1. Hij was reserverijder bij Prost Grand Prix en kreeg bij Minardi de kans om de geblesseerde Luca Badoer te vervangen. In Brazilië 1999 maakte een spectaculaire crash een einde aan zijn race, maar in de kwalificatie was hij zeven tienden sneller dan teamgenoot Marc Gene.

Minardi wilde vaker een beroep op hem doen, maar daar stak Alain Prost een stokje voor. Sarrazin verhaalt: "Ik was reserve bij Prost en plotseling belde Minardi om me een racestoeltje aan te bieden. Natuurlijk accepteerde ik dat. Na Brazilië vroegen ze me om het seizoen af te maken, ik kon gelijk tekenen. De teamleiding van Minardi heeft me vaak gebeld, maar Prost wilde me niet laten gaan. Hij zei dat ik het volgende jaar voor zijn team zou racen. Dat ik dat geloofde is de grootste fout van mijn loopbaan geweest."

"Destijds was ik nog bevriend met Alain en ik adoreerde hem. Hij is viervoudig wereldkampioen, het was een eer om voor hem te rijden. Ik volgde hem dus, maar aan het eind van het jaar gaf hij het zitje aan Nick Heidfeld om zo een jaar later beslag te kunnen leggen op Mercedes-motoren. Ik lag eruit. Prost had mijn hart gebroken. Maar dat hoort erbij. Ik was alleen, 23 jaar en zonder manager red je het niet in deze wereld. Met een sterke zaakwaarnemer had ik misschien voor mijn kans bij Minardi gegaan en dan had ik wel gezien waar dat in was uitgemond."

Sarrazin, de laatste echt goede Franse coureur. Alesi en Panis waren van een generatie daarvoor.

Er is alleen één ding in dit artikel wat ik niet snap. Mercedes motoren? Prost heeft altijd met Peugeot gereden totdat Peugeot er genoeg van had van alle kritieken en Prost over moest op Ferrari (Acer) motoren. Heeft Prost ooit Mercedes willen verleiden tot het leveren van motoren? Of heeft Prost alleen geld gevangen voor het laten debuteren van Mercedes protégé Heidfeld?

Bij Minardi had ie zichzelf ook niet in de kijker gereden, dus de gok om dat te laten schieten zodat hij volgend seizoen bij Prost kon rijden was niet zo gek lijkt me.

Zoals ik al meer liet horen hier...Ik moet Prost zo niet...Als dit verhaal weer juist is...t'ja.. ..sterkt alleen maar mijn gevoel over deze man , met mijn bezorgdheid naar zijn( misschien) toekomst job bij het nieuwe Renault.... te veel en te vaak vuil politiek spel bij deze man.
