Magnussen: "McLaren heeft geen rol gespeelt bij terugkeer in Formule 1"

Na een seizoen langs de zijlijn werd Kevin Magnussen in het najaar van 2015 door McLaren bedankt voor zijn bewezen diensten. De Deen, die in 2014 in zijn debuutrace meteen een tweede plaats pakte, reed in 2014 een volledig seizoen als racecoureur voor McLaren. Begin 2015 moest Magnussen plaats maken voor tweevoudig wereldkampioen Fernando Alonso. Na zijn 'ontslag' leek de Formule 1-loopbaan van Magnussen over. Tot dat Magnussen deze week werd gepresenteerd als de nieuwe teamgenoot van rookie Jolyon Palmer bij Renault. Magnussen laat in gesprek met Autosport weten dat McLaren geen rol heeft gespeeld bij het tot stand komen van de deal.

Magnussen reed in 2015 niet een race in een andere klasse. Magnussen wilde de 24 uur van Le Mans rijden samen met zijn vader en ex Formule 1-coureur Jan Magnussen, maar McLaren gaf hem geen toestemming. Magnussen mocht de geblesseerde Alonso nog wel vervangen tijdens de Grand Prix van Australië, maar viel stil op weg naar de grid. Magnussen laat aan Autosport het volgende weten: "McLaren heeft me niet geholpen bij het tot stand komen van het contract met Renault. Ik ben blij met deze nieuwe kans en met het team. Het is een geweldige mogelijkheid. Ik voel me er ook veel meer klaar voor nu. Tijdens mijn debuutseizoen bij McLaren voelde ik veel meer druk"

Magnussen laat verder weten dat hij wel druk voelt, maar op een positieve manier. Wel is Magnussen realistisch over de kansen van zijn team in 2016: "Je moet altijd hopen op podiums of misschien wel een overwinning. Toch is het goed dat we realistisch zijn. Renault nam Lotus pas in december over en het team is helemaal nieuw. Renault heeft in het verleden bewezen dat ze succesvol kunnen zijn in de Formule 1 en ik ben er van overtuigd dat ze dat weer kunnen zijn. We moeten geduldig zijn en de kansen pakken die we krijgen. We bekijken het van race tot race."

McLaren moet haar young driver program echt wat meer gaan stroomlijnen ipv al dit if-when ad hoc gedoe. In ieder geval meer budget om hun talent in een mid-grid team ervaring te laten op doen

  En laat zoon jongen lekker de 24h rijden als hij toch altijd op de reservebank zit..
  
  Daar zal hij niet slechter van worden van die extra ervaring.

  McLaren talent naar een Mid Grid team versassen zou momenteel een serieuse vooruitgang zijn aangezien McLaren zelf een staartteam geworden is. :)

Nee dat team heeft je laten vallen als een baksteen, en als Stoffel niet oppast doen ze hetzelfde met hem als Button besluit nog een jaar eraan te plakken.

En dan zeiken over het RBR opleidingsprogramma. Nou, daar krijgt een coureur tenminste echt een kans en als het klaar is dan wordt de betreffende coureur niet aan het lijntje gehouden.
  Stoffel mag inderdaad wel uitkijken, goed genoeg zijn is niet voldoende, hopelijk heeft Stoffel een contract waarbij hij mag tekenen indien hij een contract voor een race zitje ergens krijgt. STR bijvoorbeeld.
