Wolff: "Manor kan B-team worden van Mercedes"

Het team van Manor Racing begint steeds meer op een B-team van Mercedes te lijken. Naast motoren zal ook DTM-kampioen Pascal Wehrlein komend seizoen voor de Engelse formatie uitkomen. Wehrlein werd in 2015 kampioen in de DTM en reed daarna tests voor Mercedes en Force India in de Formule 1. Toto Wolff van Mercedes laat weten dat er een kans bestaat dat Manor daadwerkelijk een B-team van Mercedes wordt.

Wolff kijkt daarbij naar de intensieve samenwerking tussen Ferrari en het debuterende Haas F1-team. In gesprek met Auto Motor und Sport laat Wolff weten zich lichtelijk zorgen te maken over die samenwerking: "Ik kan er na met een lachend gezicht, maar ook met een droevig gezicht. Ferrari heeft het slim aangepakt met Haas. Als ze er zelf ook een competitief voordeel mee kunnen behalen hebben ze het perfect gedaan."

Wanneer Wolff wordt gevraagd of Manor al een B-team is van Mercedes laat de Oostenrijker het volgende weten: "Nee, op dit moment is Manor geen B-team van Mercedes. Naast onze motor en Pascal Wehrlein zal Manor dit seizoen ook een van onze windtunnels mogen gebruiken." Wolff laat verder weten dat hij nog een voorspellingen durft te doen of Manor de strijd aan kan gaan met het nieuwe Haas F1-team.

"Met de huidige reglementen is het mogelijk om verschillende concepten te proberen tussen teams die samenwerken. Ik ben echter niet overtuigd van deze benadering. Topteams die B-teams gebruiken om hun richting van ontwikkeling te bepalen is geen goede zaak. Met de nieuwe reglementen op komst in 2017 kan een samenwerking tussen teams echter goud waard zijn", besluit Wolff.
