Chester: "Red Bull Racing benchmark voor ons in 2016"

Renault en Red Bull Racing maken komend seizoen als enige teams gebruik van de Renault-motor. Renault raakte Toro Rosso afgelopen winter kwijt als klant. Volgens Nick Chester van Renault zal het chassis van Red Bull Racing een goede vergelijking zijn voor het fabrieksteam van Renault.

Na afloop van het seizoen verlengde Red Bull Racing het contract met Renault voor een jaar. Red Bull Racing heeft er voor gekozen om de motoren om te dopen in TAG Heuer. Chester denkt dat Red Bull Racing de graadmeter ten aanzien van het boeken van vooruitgang is voor Renault.

“Op het vlak van chassis kunnen we zien hoe goed we het doen, al kan dat pijnlijk zijn. Red Bull Racing staat er bekend om een extreem goed chassis te kunnen bouwen. Om eerlijk te zijn verwacht ik niet dat wij op hun niveau kunnen presteren dit jaar. We zijn een team in opbouw en kunnen vooralsnog dromen over een chassis zoals Red Bull Racing”, aldus Chester.

Chester laat verder weten dat Renault realistisch is over haar kansen voor dit jaar: “We hebben veel werk te doen. We zullen eerst moeten zorgen voor een goede betrouwbaarheid en daarna zien we wel hoe we vooruitgang gaan boeken dit jaar. We hebben geen doelstellingen gesteld op het vlak voor onze positie in het kampioenschap. We willen dit jaar een solide basis leggen voor 2017.”

Daarna geef je zelf eigenlijk ook aan dat het simpelweg een paar jaar zal duren.

Red Bull zal toch ook een beetje gaan de motoren naar eigen inzicht gaan aanpassen. dan wordt het vergelijken een stukje moeilijker.

  dat mag niet, hoe de motor ook heet blijft het een Renault motor en die moet dus hetzelfde zijn als die Renault motor.

Ik dacht dat Renault ervoor had gekozen dat de motor geen Renault meer mocht heten?

  dacht ik ook. Maar handige jongens zijn het wel. Bij positieve berichtgeving is het een Renault, maar zodra de teneur negatief wordt, dan is het weer een Tag Heuer. Altijd handig ;-)

Het WK ''indekken'' voor tegenvallende prestaties in 2016, kunnen ze bij Renault niet meer mislopen. Ik verwacht van hun daarom veel updates en een hoog tokenverbruik in de loop van dit seizoen, om te laten zien dat ze in 2017 wel een serieus te nemen fabrieksteam zijn. Maar in de F1 duurt het altijd meerdere jaren om aan de top te komen. Ik hoop dat ze de tijd nemen en vooral het noodzakelijke budget vrijmaken om terug te keren naar de top van F1.
