'Watkins Glen prachtige locatie voor Formule 1'

Het circuit van Watkins Glen zou de ideale locatie zijn voor een tweede Grand Prix in de Verenigde Staten. Dat oordeel velde Charlie Whiting, wedstrijddirecteur bij de internationale autosportbond FIA. Hij bezoekt het circuit elke drie jaar voor een inspectie en is lyrisch na zijn meest recente bezoek.

Toevallig werd er toen net een nieuwe asfaltlaag aangebracht op de baan. Whiting: "Ik ben van mening dat het circuit er schitterend bij ligt. Ik ben zeer onder de indruk van het werk dat verzet is. Het voldoet aan alle richtlijnen die op het hoogste niveau van toepassing zijn."

"Watkins Glen is een van de meest charismatische circuits in de VS. Je hebt nieuwe banen als Circuit of the Americas, maar dat mist het karakter dat je hier wel hebt. Watkins Glen zou een prachtige locatie voor een Formule 1-race zijn. We weten allemaal dat daar veel meer bij komt kijken, maar wat betreft circuits in de VS behoort deze baan tot de absolute top."

Watkins Glen was van 1961 tot en met 1980 al gastheer van een Grand Prix.

Ik ben 3 jaar geleden op dit circuit geweest , erg gaaf circuit met flink wat hoogteverschillen en bovenop een soort plateau! Erg mooie omgeving ook met de watervallen daar! ik ben voor!

      Het is inderdaad een authentiek en mooi circuit, maar ik vermoed dat de F1 het circuit geen goed zou doen. De F1 zou het circuit verkrachten door het om te bouwen tot het volgende 13 in dozijn Tilke circuit met chicanes in snelle bochten, gigantische asfalt uitloopstroken, een megalomaan pitcomplex voor Bernie's elitaire paddock club. Nee, dan zie ik liever de IndyCar Series terugkomen.

      @Buran, 100% mee eens, Spa geld als beste voorbeeld van wat de huidige F1 richtlijnen met een fraai authentiek circuit kunnen doen; verpesten dus..

    Vraagje, zouden ze dan evt voor de lange / korte layout gaan? En waar voor wordt de baan nu gebruikt? Lang of korte layout?

    Ik denk dat het toch bij een droom zal blijven aangezien het F2 licentie heeft in plaats van de benodigde F1 licentie die je nodig hebt om Formule 1 races te mogen organiseren.

      voor die F1 licentie zouden ze overal asfalt moeten maken ipv gras.
      gewoon niet doen dus, ik ken het circuit niet maar extra asfalt naast de baan is voor geen enkel circuit goed geweest.

    Prachtbaan. Een van mijn favorieten in iracing. Ik ben er groot voorstander zolang Tilke er met zijn geodriehoek vanaf blijft.

    Zou het dan toch... ? Terugkeer van de Red Bull Ring, terugkeer van de Mexicaanse GP... En dan binnenkort Watkins Glen? Zou men toch het licht hebben gezien en wil men weer wat meer circuits met historie op de kalender? Ik zou terugkeer naar Watkins Glen zeker toejuichen. Hier en daar een asfalt uitloopstrook, tsja daar zal het niet aan ontkomen, bovendien heeft men dat al op een paar plekken op dat circuit. Als men verder van de bochten zelf afblijft.. Zou het top zijn.
    Who's next? Estoril? Imola? Buenos Aires? ... Wat zou ik toch graag Zandvoort bij dat rijtje zetten...

      Kyalami mag ook wel weer terug van mij.

      Ten koste van de miskleunen van Tilke. Wat mij betreft mogen Singapore, Sepang, Austin blijven, en Istanbul was best een mooi circuit, zeker voor een Tilke baan. Maar alle andere Tilke baantjes hup, foetsie. Nouja .. Laat de Red Bull Ring maar blijven, dat ligt weer even wat anders.... Als Matesitz het oorspronkelijke plan om het westschleife deel er bij betrekken weer door zet... Zou het super zijn !

      Maar sommige banen horen gewoon weer terug op de F1 kalender.
      Gooi Watkins Glen, Kyalami, Buenos Aires en Imola er maar weer op. En laat me nog even dromen over "the impossible dream" Zandvoort ;-)

    Dat zou erg gaaf zijn! Echt een mooi circuit. Ik hoop alleen dat ze het niet verkloten om het formule1 geschikt te maken :S Wel grappig, een tijdje terug hadden we het er hier nog over dat Watkins Glen mooi zou zijn op de kalender. Wie weet, misschien gaat het door.
