Capito versneld aan de slag bij McLaren-Honda

Het feit dat Volkswagen zich tot en met 2019 gecommitteerd heeft aan het World Rally Championship versnelt het proces van de transfer van motorsportdirecteur Jost Capito naar McLaren-Honda. Hij is in januari reeds aangekondigd bij de Britse renstal, maar hij gaf meteen te kennen dat hij VW pas zou verlaten zodra zijn opvolger gereed stond.

Dat komt nu in een stroomversnelling omdat Volkswagen het programma voor de komende jaren heeft vastgesteld. Capito vertelde aan Autosport: "De recente vergadering in Wolfsburg en het nieuws dat daaruit voort kwam dat VW blijft racen in de WRC vormt de basis om over mijn opvolger te praten. Nu het een goedgekeurd programma is, hebben we een ander verhaal te vertellen."

"Het is lastig. Deze functie bij Volkswagen is geweldig, maar als ik hier wilde blijven had ik natuurlijk niet bij McLaren-Honda getekend. En als ik zie hoe het bij McLaren gaat, dan sta ik te popelen om mijn input te geven. We werken in nauw overleg met zowel McLaren als Volkswagen om een oplossing te vinden waar iedereen tevreden mee is. Dat gebeurt in een prettige sfeer."
