Azerbeidzjan praat over aanpassen aanvangstijd

De organisatie van de Grand Prix van Europa in Azerbeidzjan is in gesprek met Formula One Management over het wijzigen van het tijdstip waarop de eerste Formule 1-race in Bakoe aan zal vangen. Op dit moment staat de start gepland voor 18.00 uur lokale tijd.

Zodoende valt de start samen met de finish van de 24 uur van Le Mans. Door de late starttijd zou Azerbeidzjan eventueel in de knel kunnen komen met intredende duisternis, maar daar is nu wellicht een oplossing voor gevonden. De overheid heeft de zomertijd afgeschaft, waardoor het begin van de race een uur naar voren gehaald kan worden zonder dat de Europese Grand Prix de 24 uur van Le Mans overlapt.

Promotor Arif Rahimov deelde aan Autosport Middle East mede: "Ze hebben onderzoek gedaan of de zomertijd wel enig effect heeft. Een wetenschapscomité heeft bepaald dat het eigenlijk geen toegevoegde waarde heeft. We praten met FOM en de FIA. Nu de zomertijd is afgeschaft wijzigen we mogelijk de starttijd voor de race. We hebben een voorstel ingediend bij de FOM en we verwachten binnen enkele weken antwoord."
