GP2 en GP3 trappen dit weekend hun seizoen af

Het vaste voorprogramma tijdens Europese Grands Prix krijgt dit weekend gestalte met de seizoensopening voor zowel de GP2 als de GP3. In Barcelona staan de eerste races van 2016 op het programma voor beide opstapklasses. Betaalzender Ziggo Sport Totaal zendt alle wedstrijden uit de GP2 en GP3 uit dit jaar, op Ziggo Sport zal ook een aantal races te zien zijn.

In de GP2 zijn alle ogen gericht op topteams ART Grand Prix en DAMS. ART heeft het vertrek van kampioen Stoffel Vandoorne opgevangen met Sergey Sirotkin als nieuwe teamgenoot voor Nobuharu Matsushita. DAMS treedt aan met Alex Lynn en Nicholas Latifi. Ook Racing Engineering maakte met Norman Nato en Jordan King een sterke indruk tijdens de tests, terwijl Pierre Gasly en Antonio Giovinazzi bij nieuwkomer Prema Racing outsiders zijn.

Daniël de Jong is weer van de partij om Nederland te vertegenwoordigen in het voorportaal van de Formule 1. De koningsklasse van de autosport is voor hem echter te hoog gegrepen. Hij mikt op een carrière in de sportscars, maar omdat dat nog niet van de grond kwam voor dit jaar rijdt hij weer in de GP2. Bij het Nederlandse team van MP Motorsport krijgt De Jong te maken met Formule Renault 3.5-kampioen Oliver Rowland.

De GP3 heeft voor dit jaar een nieuw chassis, de GP3/16. Ook in deze klasse behoort ART Grand Prix tot de favorieten. Het team beschikt met Charles Leclerc over de beste debutant in het Europees Fomule 3-kampioenschap in 2015. De 18-jarige Monegask is door Ferrari opgenomen in de opleiding. Een van de twee Nederlanders in de GP3 komt uit voor ART Grand Prix. McLaren-protegé Nyck de Vries vergezelt Leclerc, Nirei Fukuzumi en Alexander Albon bij het topteam. Steijn Schothorst bij Campos Racing is de andere Nederlander in de GP3 dit jaar.

De meeste tegenstand voor ART zal komen van Trident Racing, dat met oudgediende Antonio Fuoco, de snelle Artur Janosz en Guiliano Alesi (de zoon van Jean Alesi) over een sterke line-up. Arden kan met Jake Dennis en Jack Aitken ook hoge ogen gooien, terwijl Koiranen GP hoopt op kunststukjes van Matthew Parry en Matevos Isaakyan. DAMS is nieuw in de GP3 en doet een beroep op Haas F1-ontwikkelingscoureur Santino Ferrucci, Renault-talent Kevin Jörg en Jake Hughes.
