Nieuwe reglementen motoren geen vooruitgang volgens Horner

De reglementen omtrent de motoren zijn een veelbesproken onderwerp in de Formule 1. De beleidsbepalers in de Formule 1 zijn het er allemaal over eens dat de verschillen tussen de motoren kleiner moeten worden en dat de kosten drastisch omlaag moeten. Ook zijn leveranciers verplicht om motoren te leveren wanneer een team daarom vraagt.

De verplichting tot levering was er tot vorig jaar niet en dat zorgde ervoor dat de beide Red Bull-teams bijna van de grid waren verdwenen. Toro Rosso sloot uiteindelijk een overeenkomst met Ferrari voor de levering van 2015-motoren, terwijl grote broer Red Bull Racing noodgedwongen bij Renault moest blijven omdat de andere leveranciers weigerden het topteam te leveren.

Ondanks voorstellen tot verbetering vindt Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner de voorstellen voor de nieuwe regels maar niets: "Het is allemaal wat slap. De verschillen worden iets kleiner en ook zakken de kosten iets. In de praktijk moeten we zien hoe de verplichting tot levering zal werken. Het is jammer dat we niet meer kunnen doen. Het mooiste zou zijn wanneer iedereen een gratis Mercedes motor kan krijgen."

      Ondanks de flauwe grap meent hij wel wat hij zegt. Red Bull is goed in het determineren van goede coureurs en het bouwen van een goed chassis. Voor de motor zijn ze afhankelijk van wat hen 'gegund' wordt. Ze kunnen niet gewoon met veel geld de beste motor kopen, want Mercedes (of Ferrari) zeggen gewoon NEE.
      Als iedereen dezelfde motor zou hebben ligt het verschil alleen nog in de auto en de rijder, en maakt Red Bull misschien wel de meeste kans op overwinningen.
      Horner weet ook wel dat dit nooit zal gebeuren dus 'the next best thing' is de verschillen tussen de motoren zo klein mogelijk.
      Maar, goed... als Renault volgend jaar veel beter zou zijn dan Mercedes en Ferrari, zul je hem hierover niet meer horen.

      @Atlaz, Red Bull kan ook gewoon zelf een motor (laten) ontwikkelen. Hebben ze meteen 2 teams die ermee kunnen rijden ook.

      Mercedes zei overigens ook pas NEE nadat Red Bull, na de toezegging van Mercedes dat er wel te praten viel, eerst nog probeerde om ook bij Ferrari een deal te krijgen. Toen dat mislukte was Mercedes er ook wel klaar mee. Gegokt en verloren noemen ze dat.
