De dag van het fatale ongeluk van Alberto Ascari

Het is vandaag exact 61 jaar geleden dat Alberto Ascari om het leven kwam bij een crash op Monza. De Italiaan, tweevoudig wereldkampioen Formule 1, zou die dag eigenlijk niet eens rijden. Hij nam een kijkje bij Eugenio Castelotti en besloot om toch maar voor een paar rondjes in de Ferrari 750 Monza te stappen.

In zijn derde rondje ging het gruwelijk mis. In de Curva del Vialone raakte zijn auto in een slip en sloeg over de kop. Ascari werd uit de auto geworpen en overleed enkele minuten later aan zijn verwonden. De Curva del Vialone is vervangen voor een chicane, die de toepasselijke naam Variante Ascari draagt. Alberto Ascari werd slechts 36 jaar.
