De kogel is door de kerk: Pirelli levert ook in de periode 2017 - 2019 de banden in de Formule 1. In oktober vorig jaar kondigde Bernie Ecclestone dat het waarschijnlijk zou zijn dat Pirelli ook na 2016 actief is in de sport, het contract werd echter pas gisteren officieel ondertekend.

Ondanks het feit dat het lang heeft geduurd voordat het nieuwe contract in kannen en kruiken was, is Pirelli gewoon doorgegaan met de voorbereidingen op volgend jaar. Waarom het zo lang duurde voordat er een nieuwe overeenkomst is gekomen ? Paul Hembery van Pirelli legt uit: "Een contract bestaat uit papier, heel veel papier. Voor ons was het eind vorig jaar al duidelijk dat we verder willen in de Formule 1, met name de juridische aspecten van het contract hebben veel tijd gekost."

Pirelli liet gisteren een concept van de nieuwe bredere banden zien in Monaco. Ferrari, Mercedes en Red Bull zijn de eerste teams die met het nieuwe rubber zullen gaan testen. De eerste tests zullen plaatsvinden in september en het testwerk van de banden moet in november afgerond zijn.
