Ryan: "Tijd nodig om weer te wennen aan de sport"

Na meer dan zes jaar afwezigheid keerde Dave Ryan eind vorig jaar terug in de Formule 1. De Nieuw-Zeelander had tot 2009 bijna dertig jaar voor McLaren gewerkt, maar werd ontslagen na tegenstrijdige uitspraken over het inhalen van Hamilton onder gele vlagcondities tijdens de Grand Prix van Australie in 2009. Ryan laat in gesprek met Autosport weten dat het tijd nodig heeft voordat hij volledig gewend is in de huidige Formule 1.

Ryan liet eind vorig jaar aan Manor weten in te gaan op de aanbieding die ze hem hadden gedaan. Geen gemakkelijke opdracht, aangezien Manor in de winter van 2015 bijna failliet was gegaan. Het proces van het team opbouwen is nog steeds gaande. Ryan over zijn terugkeer in de sport: "Het heeft me een paar races gekost om te wennen aan de huidige Formule 1.Als ik eerlijk ben, ben ik nog steeds niet helemaal gewend. Daarbij komt dat het lastig is de verwachtingen te managen. Buitenstaanders verwachten veel van ons, maar we zijn nog steeds het kleinste team van de grid. Ik moet de coureurs ook af en toe kalmeren omdat ze af en toe gefrustreerd zijn dat een 'mega' race of kwaificatie niet meer oplevert dan plek zeventien of achttien."

Volgens Ryan is hij momenteel vooral bezig om alle neuzen dezelfde kant op te krijgen. Manor heeft met de MRT05-Mercedes een enorme stap vooruit gezet ten opzichte van vorig jaar, maar qua positie is de renstal nog weinig vooruitgegaan: "We weten dat we beter kunnen dan waar we nu staan. We bouwen nog steeds aan een solide basis zodat we volgend jaar de volgende stap kunnen zetten, maar er is nog veel te doen."

De MRT-05 mag dan de minst ontwikkelde auto op de grid zijn, maar op een baan als Monza zou het met heel veel geluk misschien toch mogelijk moeten zijn om dicht op de punten te komen. De rauwe kracht van de Mercedes maakt de Manor vaak de snelste op de rechte stukken.

Toch hoop ik dat ze het uiteindelijk voor elkaar krijgen.
Ze hebben iig dit jaar ietsje minder achterstand. Maar nog steeds de hekkensluiter.
Als ze zo nu en dan op eigen kracht in de top 15 kunnen rijden dit of volgend jaar dan zou het al heel wat betekenen.

Manor weet ook steeds meer (kleine) sponsors binnen te halen. Met het prijzengeld van de afgelopen jaren zijn ze voor nu even veilig. Intern is het waarschijnlijk stukken beter geregeld dan bij Sauber. Benieuwd of ze volgend jaar, of misschien zelfs in 2017 de rode lantaarn kunnen overdragen aan Sauber.
