Williams trekt Chandhok aan als erfgoed-coureur

Karun Chandhok is door Williams opgenomen in de organisatie. De Indiase coureur komt niet op de Formule 1-afdeling terecht, hij is benoemd tot 'Heritage Driver'. Als erfgoed-rijder zal hij testen en demo's verzorgen met oude bolides van Williams. Zijn eerste optreden is komend weekend bij het Festival of Speed in Goodwood.

Chandhok kruipt voor de beroemde heuvelklim in Goodwood in een Williams FW08C uit 1983 en een Williams FW13B uit 1990. "Williams is een iconisch Brits team, diepgeworteld in de racerij, dus het is een hele eer om bij te mogen dragen aan het erfgoed-programma", zegt hij over zijn nieuwe rol. "Veel van de auto's zijn echt historisch en hebben een mooi verhaal te vertellen. In sommige gevallen ben ik de eerste in decennia die ermee zal rijden, dat is wel speciaal. Ik kijk ernaar uit om van tijd tot tijd demonstraties te verzorgen en eigenaren van oude Williams-wagens te helpen om hun ervaring te verbeteren."

Chandhok is tegenwoordig ook als analist werkzaam voor de Britse zender Channel 4.

lijkt me een leuk baantje voor hem hoor, maar wil het publiek van zo'n evenement nou niet liever de originele race coureur vd bolide terug achter het stuur zien, of als dat niet mogelijk is; de huidige race coureurs vh team? ipv ene Karim Wandklok. De rijder is toch onderdeel vd attractie..

      Ja, het museum begint vol te raken, dus tijd om een paar oudere exemplaren af te laten schrijven en plaats voor nieuwe museumstukken te maken.

    Komend weekend ga ik naar Goodwood dus eens kijken of hij de Williams heel weet te houden bij de hillclimb. Zal niet de eerste zijn die hem daar plat rijdt.

      Bij een demo wil het publiek de auto zien en horen. Wie hem bestuurd is niet zo relevant. Als het op racen aankomt wil je de coureur er ook bij zien.

      Zag vorig jaar op de Nurburgring een demo van Gasly in de oude Red Bull van Vettel met V8. Het geluid is hetzelfde, de auto hetzelfde en de baan is hetzelfde. Of hij nou bestuurd wordt door Vettel of Ghasly maakt dan geen wezenlijk verschil in mijn ogen (en oren).

      En daarom is het jammer dat Coulthard dit niet doet... Die heeft in ieder geval nog een band gehad met Williams, heeft ervaring met het rijden in oude auto's en heeft veel meer uitstraling en een beter CV dan deze Chandhok.
      Dat een Mansel of Hill dit niet wil doen kan ik begrijpen. Die willen gewoon genieten van hun pensioen.

    Lichtelijk off-topic, maar ik moet zeggen dat die Chandhok wel echt een goede toevoeging is bij Channel 4. Zit altijd erg goed met de cut-off tijden in de kwalificaties. En de strategieën tijdens de race blijken ook vaak te kloppen. Interessante analyses ook altijd.

    Wat voor type piloten gaan ze nog uitvinden naast eerste en tweede piloot, reservepiloot, ontwikkelingsrijder en nu ook erfgoedcoureur.Eerste maal dat ik daar van hoor.
    Misschien kunnen ze nog een opwarmrijder uitvinden die met iedere bolide één ronde rijdt op de banden op de juiste temperatuur te brengen en dan het stuur doorgeeft aan de echte rijder ?
    Zijn dit allemaal bronnen van bijkomende inkomsten misschien ?
