De dag dat Courage verongelukte op Zandvoort

Het is vandaag exact 46 jaar geleden dat Piers Courage om het leven kwam bij een crash tijdens de Grand Prix op Zandvoort. Op weg naar Tunnel Oost brak zijn voorwielophanging of begaf de stuurkolom het. Feit is dat hij vol rechtuit ging en op een zandbank botste, waarna zijn auto vlam vatte. Voor het De Tomaso-chassis was magnesium gebruikt om gewicht te besparen, dat brandde hevig. Courage maakte geen schijn van kans. De Brit werd slechts 28 jaar.

    In de tijd dat ze ook echt courage nodig hadden om in zo'n auto te stappen en ermee te gaan racen. Levensgevaarlijk, zo is gebleken.

    Was dat niet dat ongeluk dat de marshalls erbij stonden te kijken, terwijl een andere coureur door de vlammen heen nog iets probeerde?

      Dat was Roger Williamson inderdaad. Purley probeerde hem eruit te halen.

      Op YouTube staat inderdaad een filmpje met Nederlands commentaar, best heftig om dat te zien, en ook raar dat de race in die tijd gewoon door ging.. Zonder neutralisatie

      In 1973 er met mijn (toen nog jonge) neus bovenop gestaan. Dramatisch hoe onprofessioneel alles in die tijd nog aan toe ging....

      De opnames v Roger Williamson en de mislukte reddingsactie van Purley.. dit was toen voor het eerst LIVE. De eerste keer dat een race live op tv was. Ik was drie. mn vader keek. ik keek half mee, spelend. de brandende auto herinner ik nog. en die man die radeloos bij t wrak stond. mn pa was tegen de tv aan t schreeuwen. waarschijnlijk iets van 'doe dan gvd iets!' de commentatoren waren eerst in de veronderstelling dat de coureur er al uit was. totdat men besefte dat t purley was die roger wilde redden. onvergetelijke tv. Stel dat het nu zou gebeuren dan krijgen we daar niks van te zien. dan wordt het youtuben voor n filmpje uit t publiek.

      Schijnbaar werd er bij het ongeluk van Roger Williamson doorgereden omdat men dacht dat hij uit zijn auto was gekomen en bezig was zijn auto te blussen. De gene die aan het blussen was was echter Purley zijn auto stond echter aan de andere kant van de baan.

      De marshalls konden bij deze beide ongelukken weinig doen, dit was nog de tijd voordat zij brandvertragende kleding droegen en ze konden daardoor heel moeilijk dicht bij het vuur komen.

    Was inderdaad heftig. Stond erbij (marshall) en het enige wat je kon doen was toekijken. De auto's in die tijd werden opgebouwd met veel magnesium en dat brand nog heviger dan benzine en straalt een intense hitte uit. Met heel veel risico voor eigen leven zou je kunnen proberen de brand te blussen maar dat zou tevergeefse moeite zijn geweest.

    Het gewicht van de auto was blijkbaar waardevoller dan de overlevingskansen van een coureur. Bizarre tijd, een mystieke tijd, maar helaas ook te veel zwarte periodes.

    Ik zat vroeger als peuter ook tussen mn ouders in op de Zündapp. allemaal zonder helm en gewoon 'op goed geluk.' Gevaar was toen iets wat werd geaccepteerd. Gewoon nie aan denken dat t fout kan gaan. Dat was ook de instelling vd gemiddelde coureur. Kijkers hoopten toen veel meer dat het fout zou gaan als nu. Alles voor spektakel en ja, formule 1..daar vallen nu eenmaal gewoon soms dooien bij ja. als je t te gevaarlijk vindt moet je maar gaan korfballen. Dat de dood meereed was juist 1 vd aantrekkelijke aspecten om F1 te kijken. En niemand hoefde zich daar schuldig om te voelen. Het was meer een soort respect dat zij dit durfden. Hun leven in de waagschaal te leggen.

      Stirling Moss gaf ook aan dat dit aspect voor hem een belangrijk element voor zijn beleving was. Hij accepteerde het gevaar en de dood en vond het er zelfs bij horen. Jacky Stewart heet dat veranderd en alleen Jacky Ickx verzette zich nog tegen veiligheid. Stirling is wel gestopt na een bijna fataal ongeluk. Ik heb hem eens ontmoet in Zandvoort bij de historische races in een Merc met een jonge vriendin...
