Capito rond Belgische GP in dienst bij McLaren

De Grand Prix van België wordt waarschijnlijk de eerste Grand Prix met Jost Capito als nieuwe directeur aan het roer bij McLaren. De Duitser is in januari reeds vastgelegd, maar hij verlaat zijn post als motorsportbaas bij Volkswagen pas zodra een geschikte opvolger is gevonden en de WRC-titel nagenoeg veilig is gesteld. In augustus is het waarschijnlijk zover.

Capito verkondigde bij de FIA Sport Conference in Turijn: "Het gaat er dit jaar echt nog van komen. Ik denk eind augustus, hooguit begin september. Ergens in die regio. Ik kijk uit naar mijn overstap naar McLaren, anders had ik het niet gedaan. In de paddock zie je nog dezelfde gezichten als in de periode dat ik nog voor Sauber werkzaam was. Ze zijn alleen wat ouder geworden."

"Verder zie ik niet veel veranderingen. De auto's zijn anders, de technologie is anders, maar het is nog steeds Formule 1. Deze sport is altijd aantrekkelijk voor autofabrikanten. De meeste automerken houden de Formule 1 continu in de gaten, maar toetreding is afhankelijk van zoveel factoren. Maar voor elke autofabrikant is het een trots moment wanneer ze beslissen om in de Formule 1 te stappen."
