Caros Sainz Jr. kende met twee zesde plaatsen een prima opening van het weekend op de Red Bull Ring. Op zaterdagmorgen liep het echter minder goed bij de Spanjaard. Sainz Jr. miste het laatste deel van de training door een probleem met de motor.

Verschillende media melden dat de motor van Sainz Jr. gewisseld moet worden. Het is nog niet bekend of de Spanjaard daarvoor een straf krijgt in de vorm van een gridpenalty.
