Jenson Button noemt geruchten 2017 'gokwerk'

Jenson Button noemt de speculaties over zijn toekomst in de Formule 1 'gokwerk', totdat hij daadwerkelijk een besluit gaat nemen over waar die toekomst ligt.

In een interview met Sky Sports maakte Button duidelijk dat hij volgend jaar in een auto wil rijden die voor de podiums kan strijden. McLaren, dat de keuze tussen Button en de jonge Belg Stoffel Vandoorne pas in september maakt, verwacht in 2017 een flinke sprong voorwaarts te maken. Op dit moment staat de Britse equipe zevende, en sinds 2012 werd er maar tijdens één race het podium gehaald.

Volgens de laatste geruchten laat Button McLaren achter voor oude liefde Williams, maar Button zegt daarover: "Het is allemaal gokwerk want niemand weet wat er gaat gebeuren. Tenminste, niet totdat ik bedacht heb wat ik volgend jaar ga doen. Het team heeft aangegeven pas in september de knoop door te hakken, dus ik snap al deze speculaties niet."

"We gaan zien wat er gaat gebeuren. Voor nu probeer ik van het racen te genieten. Hopelijk kunnen we in Hongarije meestrijden voor de punten," zegt de Brit, die volgens Johnny Herbert nog niet klaar is voor een 'exit' uit de Formule 1. "Op dit moment niet nee, maar we zien het over een paar maanden wel. Ik wil niet racen om te fungeren als veldvulling."

Om in 2017 op het podium te kunnen eindigen, moet McLaren volgens Button 'een flinke stap voorwaarts' maken. "Ik wil weer vechten voor podiums. Ik heb veel moeite gestoken in de ontwikkeling van de samenwering met Honda. Het is een spannend project, omdat je niet alleen invloed hebt op de aerodynamica, maar ook op de motor. Maar voor volgend jaar moet er een flinke stap gemaakt worden, en dat is wat ik nodig heb om volgend jaar in de Formule 1 te rijden."

Ik mag Button wel. Maar Vandoorne MOET volgend jaar gewoon een goed stoeltje hebben (met goed bedoel ik middenveld, subtop, top).

  Fernando en Lewis kennen elkaar nog uit 2007. dat was toen niet de ideale mix weet ik me te herinneren. Ik ben bang dat wie er ook naast LH komt te rijden altijd een strijd moet voeren met et ego van mister Hamilton.

  Mee eens. Lijkt mij fantastisch. Lijkt mee ook fantastische marketingwaarde voor Mercedes. Daar kunnen 3 kampioenschappen Ham/Ros niet tegenop! Is een beetje als Prost/Senna bij McLaren.
