Problemen Vijay Mallya hebben geen invloed op Force India

Force India's mede-eigenaar Vijay Mallya zit persoonlijk diep in de problemen met justitie, maar de Indiër ontkent dat dit alles invloed heeft op de renstal.

In maart vaardigden de autoriteiten in India een arrestatiebevel uit voor Mallya omdat hij verdacht wordt van witwas-praktijken. De Indiase zakenman ontkent echter alle betrokkenheid bij Autosport. "Ik heb dit eerder meegemaakt in 1985. Toen hebben ze me twee jaar onderzocht, en uiteindelijk werd ik vrijgesproken, omdat ze niks konden vinden. Helaas zijn deze onderzoeken een politieke tool geworden en regelmatig gaan de onderzoeksbureau's hun eigen gangetje", zegt Mallya, die de praktijken niet anders kan omschrijven als een 'heksenjacht'.

Tegenwoordig gebruikt de Indiër Londen als thuisbasis. De Indiase autoriteiten hebben hem gemaand terug te keren naar India, maar dat is onmogelijk omdat zijn paspoort ingetrokken is. De 60-jarige zegt wel volledig mee te willen werken aan het onderzoek. "Ze hebben toegang tot veel bestuursleden van Kingfisher Airlines en ook tot duizenden documenten. Als ik het enige missende puzzelstukje ben, kunnen ze naar London komen om mij te verhoren, een radioconferentie beginnen of desnoods een mailtje met vragen sturen, en dan zal ik ze beantwoorden."

"Het lijkt een beetje vreemd dat de autoriteiten een arrestatiebevel uitvoeren en mijn paspoort innemen, alleen omdat ik niet fysiek aanwezig ben in India. Wat voor een gevoel moet mij dat geven over hun echte intenties?" vraagt Mallya zich af. Force India is echter financieel zelfstandig genoeg dat de problemen van de eigenaren geen invloed hebben op het team. Mallya en Sahara-eigenaar Subruto Roy hebben beiden 42,5 procent van Force India's aandelen. Mallya zit in de problemen, Roy zit inmiddels in de cel voor financiële onregelmatigheden.

"In de laatste drie jaar hebben we significant meer sponsoren binnengehaald. De financiële bijdrage van de eigenaren is daardoor nihil, zeker vergeleken met vijf jaar geleden. Ik kan gerust zeggen dat het team financieel op eigen voeten staat."
