V8 Supercars maakt werk van komst De Silvestro

Simona de Silvestro vervolgt haar loopbaan mogelijk in de V8 Supercars. De Zwitserse, afgelopen seizoen nog teamgenoot van Robin Frijns bij Andretti in de Formule E, maakte vorig jaar al haar debuut in de Australische raceklasse. Ze kreeg een wildcard voor de Bathurst 1000.

De V8 Supercars is erop gebrand om in 2017 een vrouw op de grid te hebben en De Silvestro geldt als voornaamste kandidate. Autosport vernam van V8 Supercars-directeur James Warburton: "Het feit dat Simona de snelste vrouw op vier wielen is, zal een nieuwe generatie inspireren en het potentieel en de mogelijkheden van een vrouwelijke coureur op het hoogste niveau blootleggen."

"Dat is een belangrijke ambitie en een verplichting die wij voelen. Simona is testrijder in de Formule 1 geweest, is een van de drie vrouwen die in de IndyCar op het podium hebben gestaan en haar prestaties in de karting en Europese raceklasses maken haar absoluut een doelwit voor de V8 Supercars. Ze is pas 27 jaar en heeft al een indrukwekkende carrière achter de rug."

    Simona heeft, ondanks haar jonge leeftijd, al zoveel klasses van de autosport bewandeld.
    Maar geen enkele met groot success.
    Ik hoop dat ze hier eindelijk haar klasse gevonden heeft, een langere loopbaan in kan uitbouwen en succesvol zijn;
