Wolff: "Manor is geen 'Toto Rosso'"

Nadat Manor Esteban Ocon bekendmaakte als hun tweede rijder voor de rest van het seizoen, rijst steeds meer de vraag of Mercedes niet een eigen juniorteam in de Formule 1 aan het opzetten is, vergelijkbaar met Toro Rosso.

Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff reageerde zelf tegenover Bild: "Nee, er is geen sprake van een 'Toto Rosso'. We leveren de motoren en hebben van Manor de kans gekregen om twee junior-rijders, waarvoor wij zelf geen stoeltje hebben, een zitje in de Formule 1 te bieden. Dit betekent echter niet dat we hen nog verder gaan ondersteunen."

"We zijn niet van plan het team te kopen, misschien dat we in de toekomst de samenwerking nog iets verder uitbouwen, maar onze plannen gaan niet verder dan dat. We willen er na het mislopen van Max Verstappen echter alles aan doen, om niet nog een zeer getalenteerd coureur aan onze neus voorbij te laten gaan, omdat wij op dit moment geen plek voor hem hebben."

      Prima gedachte Toto...echter alle andere talenten zitten niet in diezelfde categorie als Max kwa talent........dus dit is echt mosterd na de maaltijd

    Mercedes kon VES geen f1 stoeltje aanbieden. En om eerlijk te zijn. STR is wel goed team om mee te starten. RB heeft wel de gok genomen. Mercedes kon dat niet.

      Moet je je bedenken dat Mercedes Max in 2015 niet onder kon brengen bij Manor omdat daar ene zekere Will Stevens reed.

    Er is een goede ontwikkeling gaande tussen die teams. Manor is ook niet meer het lachertje van de grid inmiddels en dat heeft toch veel te maken met de steun van Mercedes en de kwaliteit van de coureurs die geen kleurloze paydrivers meer zijn.

    zou niet verkeerd zijn als zowel Ferrari en Merc in navolging van RedBull een klein team sponsoren en hiermee de mogelijkheid hebben om echte talenten in de F1 te introduceren

      @Rudolf53, dat doet Mercedes toch al? Wehrlein en Ocon zijn Mercedes protégé 's en Wolff heeft aangegeven dat hij ervoor gaat zorgen dat Stoffel volgend jaar ook F1 rijdt. Als pu leverancier heeft Mercedes invloed op meerdere teams, terwijl Red Bull alleen invloed heeft op TR. Verschillende strategieën en het is interessant op op langere termijn te zien welke de beste is. Mercedes kan overigens wel een satelliet team sponsoren maar waarschijnlijk is dat voor Ferrari financieel net iets teveel van het goede.n

    Goede ontwikkeling. Toto heeft zich ook al uitgelaten over Stoffel. Dat als Mclaren er niet voor zorgt dat Stoffel volgend jaar rijdt, hij er persoonlijk voor zal zorgen dat hij een stoeltje krijgt. Stoffels contract loopt einde seizoen af. Ron Dennis zou gek zijn zo'n goed talent niet te gebruiken/plaatsen.

      Wat ik frappant vind omdat Stoffel geen Mercedes-kroost is. Blijkbaar heeft Toto dus toch wel het beste voor met de F1.
