Monza verkoos flexibiliteit boven lang contract

Het circuit van Monza had een nieuw zevenjarig contract voor de organisatie van de Grand Prix van Italië kunnen sluiten met de Formule 1, maar heeft besloten dat niet te doen. Dat onthulde oud-coureur Ivan Capelli, betrokken bij de organisatie van de race, aan Auto Motor und Sport.

Monza bereikte met Bernie Ecclestone een akkoord over een driejarige verbintenis. De commerciële baas van de Formule 1 geeft doorgaans de voorkeur aan langere contracten, maar dat wilde het Italiaanse circuit niet. Capelli: "Monza wilde liever flexibel blijven, want in de Formule 1 weet je maar nooit wat er kan gebeuren."

Het nieuwe contract van Monza is wel controversieel. Imola onderneemt juridische stappen tegen de nieuwe verbintenis. Zij vinden dat Automobile Club d'Italia de overheidssteun voor alle circuits beschikbaar moet stellen, niet alleen voor Monza. De rechtszaak over deze kwestie staat gepland voor 26 oktober.
