Button hint naar optredens in rallycross, Super GT

McLaren-coureur Jenson Button overweegt om volgend jaar te racen in de rallycross of het Japanse Super GT-kampioenschap. Dat ving Reuters van hem op bij een promo-evenement in Singapore. Button greep voor 2017 naast de racestoeltjes bij McLaren, maar hij blijft als ambassadeur en reserve aan de Britse renstal verbonden.

Reuters vroeg de wereldkampioen van 2009 naar zijn plannen voor volgend jaar. "Ik wil meer tijd doorbrengen met familie en vrienden en ik wil andere dingen gaan doen. Ik hou van triatlons en misschien ga ik me wel wagen aan rallycross of Super GT." De vader van Button was een rallycross-coureur en de Brit heeft vaker aangegeven dat wel te willen proberen na zijn Formule 1-carrière.

Button mist door deze ontwikkelingen wel het nieuwe tijdperk in de Formule 1, met radicaal andere auto's. "Ik ben blij met de ingrijpende regelwijzigingen en ik hoop dat het de boel dichter bij elkaar brengt. De Formule 1 heeft dat nodig. Achter Mercedes spelen zich zat mooie gevechten af. Er zijn genoeg mooie races, maar Lewis Hamilton en Nico Rosberg hebben het gewoon te makkelijk."
