Britse Grand Prix onder druk door stijgende fee

De organisatie van de Grand Prix van Groot-Brittannië heeft negen maanden de tijd om zich te buigen over de vraag of het ook na 2019 een Formule 1-race wil organiseren. Het contract van Silverstone loopt door tot 2026, maar die verbintenis bevat een clausule waardoor circuiteigenaar BRDC of Bernie Ecclestone het na 2019 op kunnen zeggen.

Om die clausule te activeren moet men elkaar echter al voor het Grand Prix-weekend van 2017, voor 9 juli op de voorlopige kalender, op de hoogte brengen. De jaarlijkse stijging van de race fee van vijf procent drukt zwaar op de begroting van Silverstone. Die afspraak dateert uit 2009 en zou in het ergste geval het einde van de Britse Grand Prix op Silverstone in kunnen luiden.

BRDC-voorzitter Derek Warwick deelde aan Autosport mede: "We kijken waar we naartoe gaan voor 2019, of we daarna nog een Grand Prix willen organiseren en of Silverstone verder kan zonder de Formule 1. Als je het niet kunt betalen, kun je het niet betalen. We huisvesten de Britse Grand Prix nu al vele jaren zonder enige vorm van staatssteun of een investeerder."

"We hebben 50 miljoen pond uitgegeven aan het nieuwe pitsgebouw en we hebben het circuit aangepast zoals Bernie Ecclestone wilde, om de Grand Prix te bemachtigen. Maar door het jaarlijkse stijgingspercentage loopt de fee nu de spuigaten uit. De ontsnappingsclausule geldt voor de periode na 2019, maar die moeten we voor het weekend van 2017 activeren. We hebben dus nog negen maanden bedenktijd."

  Heeft geen zin. Ze worden gedreven door de fee. De Europese circuits hebben niets te eisen; het is betalen of opflikkeren.

  Verenigt U en stel eisen!! Samen uit de F1 stappen en een nieuwe klasse beginnen! Da's wat de F1 op dit moment echt kan missen want dan is 't helemaal niks meer. Van de Amerikaanse fans zullen ze het niet moeten hebben.

  Van het Amerikaanse Liberty Media hoeven we ook niks te verwachten. In Amerika hebben ze weinig tot geen historisch besef. Althans, zeker niet qua F1. De plannen voor meer gokken in het achterhoofd houdend, denk ik dat ze er echt nul boodschap aan hebben wat Europese circuits willen als ze de fee niet willen (of kunnen) betalen. Ik hou wel van historisch besef en het is helemaal mooi om ontwikkelingen live mee te maken. Het kan natuurlijk heel anders lopen, maar gezien de ontwikkelingen van de laatste jaren (zowel economisch als binnen de sport) zou het me niks verbazen als F1 uiteindelijk juist ten onder gaat door het geld. Het draait meer en meer om poen. Prima, moeten zij weten, maar geen hond die nog gaat kijken/betalen voor een sport die net zo'n kermis wordt als Las Vegas ofzo. Ik hoop dus dat ze geen cowboytje gaan spelen en erg veel respect zullen opbrengen voor de bakermat van de F1: Europa.

Bepaalde races moeten gewoon een beschermde status hebben. De GP van het VK is daar er een van war mij betreft. Spa (geen ander circuit in België) en Japan zijn de twee anderen.

  Mee eens ze moten 10 van vaste banen hebben en de rest wisselend ,vind ook dat ze minimaal 80.000 kaarten moeten verkopen dan vallen gelijk een paar van die zandbank banen af het is toch geen gezicht al die lege tribunes op tvv.
