Portugal blaast Grand Prix wellicht nieuw leven in

In Portugal gaan stemmen op om de mogelijkheden voor een hernieuwde Grand Prix af te tasten. Het land was van 1984 jaarlijks vertegenwoordigd op de Formule 1-kalender met een race op Estoril. In 1996 vond de voorlopig laatste editie van de Portugese Grand Prix plaats.

De politiek heeft nu interesse om het evenement nieuw leven in te blazen. Politica Isilda Gomes: "Het is tijd om weer na te denken over het organiseren van een Formule 1-race." En Marca citeert premier Antonio Costa: "De Formule 1 terug in Portugal is een opwindende gedachte."

De vraag is alleen nog waar de Grand Prix plaats zou moeten vinden. Estoril heeft er in de vorm van Portimao een geduchte concurrent voor een eventuele race bij gekregen. De Formule 1 bezocht het circuit in de Algarve in 2009 al eens voor een test, al viel die toen grotendeels in het water door de vele regenval.
