Stoffel Vandoorne leert Japanse cultuur kennen

Het jaar in de Super Formula is uitermate bruikbaar voor Stoffel Vandoorne wanneer hij straks fulltime gaat racen in de Formule 1. Dat zegt Yusuke Hasegawa, baas van het Formule 1-project van Honda. Vandoorne heeft door zijn seizoen in Japan de cultuur van het land leren kennen.

Dat zal hem alleen maar van pas komen in zijn eerste volledige jaar bij McLaren-Honda in 2017. Hasegawa: "Het zal onze samenwerking alleen maar verbeteren. Communiceren met Japanners is niet altijd eenvoudig, dat beseffen wij ook wel. Maar omdat hij dit jaar in Japan racete, zal dat met Stoffel in de toekomst allicht wat makkelijker gaan."

Hasegawa heeft lovende woorden over voor het optreden van Vandoorne eerder dit jaar in Bahrein. "De manier waarop Stoffel eerder dit jaar in Bahrein inviel voor Fernando Alonso heeft indruk op me gemaakt. Hij had nog nooit eerder met die auto gereden, maar bleef rustig, paste zich razendsnel aan en reed een perfecte race. Petje af."

    Ik ben echt heel benieuwd wat Stoffel volgend jaar gaat laten zien met alonso als stalgenoot. Ik heb ook zijn palmares eens bekeken. Toch wel indrukwekkend hoor. Laatbloeier?

      Ik ben idd ook benieuwd. Heb wel begrepen dat men meer onder de indruk was van Frijns bij zijn vorige team. Palmares ziet er goed uit maar tegenstand was ook niet heel erg aansprekend. Hij zal het vast wel aardig gaan doen. Maar Alonso zal gehakt van hem maken vermoed ik.

      Ik denk dat hij weinig zal onder doen voor Alonso, zeker naar het einde van het seizoen toe. Hij heeft zich in Bahrein ook heel snel aangepast.

      Hij is inmiddels zo omhooggeschreven dat hij eigenlijk meteen op het niveau van Alonso moet rijden. Degelijk zoals in Bahrein is niet meer voldoende.
      Ik kan zijn prestaties in het verleden niet goed inschatten, nipt verslagen door Magnussen in de f3.5, verslagen door Palmer in de GP2 maar vorig seizoen erg overtuigend kampioen in diezelfde klasse.
      Magnussen en Pal er lijken aan elkaar gewaagd, zou dat zijn niveau zijn? En dan nog is het lastig te bepalen hoe hoog dat niveau is, want die Renault maakt een eerlijk oordeel iver die twee moeilijk.

    Ken een Amerikaan die 17 jaar in Tokio woont en werkt, uiteraard Japans spreekt, maar zich nog bijna dagelijks verbaasd over Japan en de Japanners.... Mooi dat Stoffel de Cultuur van Japan al binnen een paar maanden heeft leren begrijpen.....

    Stoffel komt op mij over als een rustige en slimme gozer. Ook dat puntje bij zijn invalbeurt was gewoon heel goed, zeker voor een rookie. Gaat helemaal goed komen, nu nog een goede auto svp.

    Ik heb in iedergeval gehoord dat ze bij McLaren allemaal een "Japanse inburgering" hebben gehad.
    Zo was er vorige week nog een "Japanse avond" die de analen in is gegaan als de meest waanzinnige avond in Woking ooit. Zelfs de politie moest er uiteindelijk nog aan te pas komen.
    De Bukkake met een, werkelijk waar!, stomdronken Jenson in het midden was al legendarisch maar toen Ron zijn Manga verzameling uit het directiekantoor haalde werd het nog veeeeel gekker.
    Pas in de late uurtjes werd het echt te gek en moest de lokale hermandad ingrijpen nadat Stoffel en Honda baas Hasegawa ("call me Haas haha haha ha") een gevalletje "groping" loslieten op de dames van de admi. Zelfs Alonso scheen daar niet helemaal vrijuit te zijn gegaan.
    Afijn, de sushi vooraf en de sublieme beef die daarop volgde brachten de stemming er goed in, uiteraard geholpen door de sake en Sapporo welke exact op temperatuur waren.
    Zodoende voelde de aanwezige Honda delegatie zich meer dan thuis en werd het toch nog gezelliger dan menigeen vooraf vermoedde.

    Als ze Stoffel een waardeloze auto geven, dan wordt het een gevecht om de streep te halen iedere race.
    Ze lopen nog ver achter om met de top te meten.
