Callum Ilott droomt van toekomst in Formule 1

Callum Ilott houdt alle opties open na een uitdagend jaar in het Europees kampioenschap Formule 3. De 17-jarige Brit sloot het seizoen namens Van Amersfoort Racing af op een zesde plek in de stand. Hij maakte ooit onderdeel uit van het opleidingsprogramma van Red Bull, maar nu probeert hij het op eigen kracht zo ver mogelijk te schoppen. Met de Formule 1 als ultieme doel.

Ilott zegt in de Hertfordshire Mercury: "Het is een uitdagend jaar voor me geweest, maar ik ben optimistisch voor de toekomst door hetgeen ik geleerd heb en hoe ik me ontwikkeld heb. Op het eerste gezicht lijkt een zesde plaats misschien teleurstellend, maar ik heb mijn eerste zege in de autosport behaald en we zijn zes keer op het podium geëindigd. Dat is een enorme stap ten opzichte van 2015, toen ik maar één podiumplek in de wacht sleepte."

"We hebben veel pech gehad en door een ongelukkige samenloop van omstandigheden hebben we niet vaker kunnen laten zien waartoe we in staat zijn. Meerdere straffen wegens ongeoorloofde motorwissels hebben me veel punten gekost, waardoor ik ver achterop raakte bij de top drie. Het was zwaar, maar ik ben ook te weten gekomen wat ik moet verbeteren. Ik had deze ervaringen nodig om volwassen te worden. Gelukkig ben ik pas 17 jaar."

"Vooruit kijkend naar 2017 gaat het erom het pad richting de Formule 1 te vervolgen. Dat kan door opnieuw in het Europees Formule 3-kampioenschap te rijden en dat is iets dat ik serieus overweeg. We hebben dit seizoen laten zien dat de snelheid aanwezig is. Met een beetje geluk kan ik mijn rivalen op constante basis verslaan en voor de titel gaan."

welke Brit gaat Hamilton opvolgen? Tot nu toe valt het tegen...ik vrees voor de britten dat ze in het post-Hamilton tijdperk niet meer veel gaan winnen.

Stel dat Ilott nog een jaartje F3 gaat rijden, dan is de kans best groot dat hij Verschoor als teammate krijgt imo. Dan kunnen we mooi zien hoe goed deze jongens zijn tov elkaar, waarbij Verschoor natuurlijk wel een rookie is zonder F3 ervaring.

Het zou mooi zijn als ILO de move kan maken van VAR naar MP: die 2 Nederlandse stallen hebben VES ook geen windeieren gelegd tenslotte! (MP zijn eerste test en VAR zijn eerste seizoen in een singleseater). Aangezien DEJ erg onder de maat presteert zie ik liever ILO in de GP2 en laat DEJ maar eens kijken of tourwagens of WEC iets voor hem is! (mijn mening)
