Marcus Ericsson: "Sauber maakt absoluut vooruitgang"

Punten scoorde hij dit jaar nog niet, maar Sauber-coureur Marcus Ericsson bespeurt absoluut vooruitgang bij zijn werkgever. De Zweed is bezig aan zijn tweede seizoen bij de Zwitserse renstal, na in 2014 zijn debuut gemaakt te hebben bij het inmiddels ter ziele gegane Caterham F1 Team. Ericsson reed in Austin lange tijd op het randje van de top tien, om uiteindelijk als veertiende te finishen.

In de persconferentie werd Ericsson gisteren gevraagd hoe zijn team de laatste races van het jaar benadert. De kans bestaat dat Sauber voor de tweede keer in drie jaar tijd een seizoen afsluit met nul punten. Ericsson wil daar nu nog niet aan denken: "Het is van de buitenkant misschien niet te zien, maar we gaan zeker vooruit. We komen nog een paar tienden tekort om in de top te finishen. In Austin kwalificeerde me op snelheid in de top vijftien en in de race lag ik lange tijd op de elfde plaats. Tegen aan het eind van de race kreeg ik het zwaar met de banden, maar ik kijk terug op een geslaagd raceweekend."

Ericsson werd ook gevraagd wat de beste kans is voor Sauber om dit jaar nog punten te scoren: "Ik denk dat onze beste kans hier is. Dit is een circuit waar topsnelheid belangrijk is op het lange rechte stuk en dat hebben we wel. Ook zijn er niet heel veel bochten en dat is ook in ons voordeel. Brazilië en Abu Dhabi worden moeilijkere races voor ons. Het is belangrijk dat we een punt scoren om over Manor heen te gaan in het constructeurskampioenschap."
