Williams zag altijd een kampioen in Nico Rosberg

Mercedes-coureur Nico Rosberg veroverde afgelopen weekend op 31-jarige leeftijd zijn eerste wereldtitel in de Formule 1. De Duitser had er 206 Grand Prix-starts voor nodig, maar nu is hij eindelijk kampioen. Rosberg begon zijn Formule 1-loopbaan in 2006 bij het team van Williams. Daar zagen ze altijd een toekomstig kampioen in hem.

Althans, dat beweert vice-teambaas Claire Williams nu. "Het was toen al overduidelijk dat Nico in de toekomst de titel zou pakken. Sommige coureurs zijn gewoon van kampioensmateriaal gemaakt en bij Rosberg wist je meteen dat hij dat ook was. Ik hoorde dat hij al 23 Grands Prix heeft gewonnen, het hoogste aantal zeges voordat iemand ook het kampioenschap op zijn naam schreef."

"Het zij zo, soms loopt het zo. Nico heeft geweldig gepresteerd dit jaar, hij heeft alles gedaan wat hij moest doen. Voor hem voelt het misschien alsof het hoog tijd was voor een titel, maar Rosberg is de verdiende nieuwe kampioen. Ik ben heel blij voor hem."
