Terugblik op 2016: De Grand Prix van Groot-Brittannië

Het Formule 1-seizoen 2016 is voorbij, de autosport-loze maand december is aangebroken. F1Today.net blikt daarom via een 21-delige serie uitgebreid terug op het afgelopen jaar in de koningsklasse van de autosport. In het tiende deel staat de Grand Prix van Groot-Brittannië centraal.

Door een fikse regenbui vlak voor de start begon de Britse Grand Prix achter de safety car. Na vijf ronden stuurde Bernd Maylander de Mercedes de pits in en kon de race echt beginnen. Veel coureurs besloten echter met Maylander mee naar binnen te gaan voor andere banden.

Een groot deel van het veld stapte toen al over op intermediates. De top drie - bestaande uit Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg en Max Verstappen - wachtte daar nog even mee. Zij zochten pas de pits op toen Pascal Wehrlein van de baan schoof en een virtuele safety car-periode van kracht werd.

Verstappen voelde zich lekkerder op de intermediates dan Rosberg en de Red Bull Racing-coureur liep zienderogen in op de rijder van Mercedes. De jonge Nederlander passeerde Rosberg met een prachtige gedurfde actie buitenom in de bocht Becketts en lag toen tweede achter Hamilton.

Terwijl de baan opdroogde, ontstond er een verraderlijk stroompje in de eerste bocht. Sebastian Vettel en Fernando Alonso spinden en konden hun weg vervolgen. Rio Haryanto vond er zijn Waterloo, waardoor de beide wagens van Manor halverwege de race al uitgevallen waren.

Op de slicks was Rosberg weer sneller dan Verstappen. De Duitser bleef vijf ronden achter de Nederlander hangen totdat hij hem eindelijk voorbij ging. Rosberg stuitte vervolgens op problemen met de versnellingsbak en vanaf de pitmuur ontving hij instructies om die problemen te omzeilen.

Dat was echter niet toegestaan en dus incasseerde de Mercedes-coureur na afloop een tijdstraf van tien seconden, waardoor Verstappen opschoof naar de tweede plaats. Hamilton won voor de derde keer op een rij op Silverstone en verkleinde zijn achterstand op Rosberg in het kampioenschap tot één punt.

Ik zag laatst beelden terug van de inhaalactie van Max op Rosberg....man man man dat britse publiek stond flink te huigen toen ze dit zagen gebeuren en de camera op ze inzoomde...echt mooi. Superrace van Max. Der Regenmeister.
