Terugblik op 2016: De Grand Prix van België

Het Formule 1-seizoen 2016 is voorbij, de autosport-loze maand december is aangebroken. F1Today.net blikt daarom via een 21-delige serie uitgebreid terug op het afgelopen jaar in de koningsklasse van de autosport. In het dertiende deel staat de Grand Prix van België centraal.

De eerste race na de zomerpauze deed meteen veel stof opwaaien. De als tweede gekwalificeerde Max Verstappen kwam niet goed weg en verloor een aantal plekken. De Nederlander probeerde in de eerste bocht nog wat goed te maken door binnendoor te duiken bij Kimi Raikkonen.

Op dat moment stuurde Sebastian Vettel scherp in voor de La Source-hairpin. Raikkonen en Verstappen konden geen kant op en het drietal raakte elkaar. Vettel ging in de rondte, Raikkonen liep schade op en de voorvleugel van Verstappen was eveneens beschadigd.

Er is na afloop veel gediscussieerd over de schuldvraag. Het duo van Ferrari wees met een beschuldigende vinger naar Verstappen, de Nederlander vond dat Vettel het meest te verwijten viel. De wedstrijdleiding deelde echter geen straffen uit en beoordeelde het als een race-incident.

Later in de wedstrijd kreeg Verstappen het opnieuw aan de stok met Raikkonen, die zich beklaagde over de manier van verdedigen van de Red Bull Racing. De reactie van Verstappen: "Zij verpestten mijn race, dan laat ik ze er echt niet zomaar voorbij. Dan rij ik ze nog liever van de baan."

De race op het circuit van Spa-Francorchamps, met talloze Nederlandse fans, stond bol van de actie. Kevin Magnussen beleefde een zware crash bovenop de heuvel na Eau Rouge/Raidillon. Zijn auto verdween op hoge snelheid in de bandenstapels, maar de Deen kwam er nagenoeg ongeschonden vanaf. Esteban Ocon debuteerde bij Manor als vervanger van Rio Haryanto.

Carlos Sainz kreeg te maken met een klapband op het rechte stuk van Kemmel. Vooraan was er geen vuiltje aan de lucht voor Nico Rosberg. De Duitser triomfeerde, voor Daniel Ricciardo en Lewis Hamilton, die achteraan was gestart vanwege gridstraffen voor meerdere motorwissels.
