Terugblik op 2016: De Grand Prix van Italië

Het Formule 1-seizoen 2016 is voorbij, de autosport-loze maand december is aangebroken. F1Today.net blikt daarom via een 21-delige serie uitgebreid terug op het afgelopen jaar in de koningsklasse van de autosport. In het veertiende deel staat de Grand Prix van Italië centraal.

Rosberg legde de basis voor zijn zege op Monza al bij de start. Lewis Hamilton kwam maar matig weg en viel terug naar de zesde positie, waardoor Rosberg de leiding kon pakken. Achter hem sloten Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen, Valtteri Bottas en Daniel Ricciardo aan.

Ook Max Verstappen startte slecht en viel terug naar de twaalfde plaats. Het veld kwam zonder incidenten door de eerste ronde, maar in ronde twee ging het meteen mis voor Felipe Nasr en Jolyon Palmer. Bij het uitkomen van de eerste chicane sneed de Sauber-coureur de Britse Renault-rijder de pas af, wat voor beiden het einde van de race betekende.

Hamilton was door zijn slechte start veroordeeld tot een inhaalrace om de verloren plaatsen goed te maken en het eerste slachtoffer van zijn dadendrang werd Ricciardo. Met Bottas had de Brit meer moeite, mede doordat de Williams-coureur net als Hamilton over een Mercedes-krachtbron beschikte.

Mercedes was op hardere banden gestart dan de rest en kon daardoor een afwijkende één-stop strategie hanteren. Dat hielp Hamilton voorbij aan Ferrari-coureurs Sebastian Vettel en Kimi Raikkonen, waardoor hij als tweede achter de ongenaakbare Rosberg over de streep kwam.

De tifosi konden juichen voor Vettel op het podium, terwijl de Red Bull Racing-rijders in de slotfase nog voor actie zorgden. Verstappen wurmde zich voorbij Sergio Perez voor positie zeven, terwijl Ricciardo op knappe wijze Bottas wist uit te remmen voor een vijfde plaats.
