Marcus Ericsson: "Ervaring en verandering mentaliteit hebben me sterker gemaakt"

Marcus Ericsson begint in maart aan zijn vierde seizoen in de Formule 1. De Zweed debuteerde bij Caterham en reed de afgelopen twee jaar bij het team van Sauber. Ook in 2017 racet Ericsson voor Sauber. Ericsson zegt een betere coureur te zijn geworden door het krijgen van meer ervaring en het veranderen van de benadering van een raceweekend.

Volgens Ericsson was hij vaak gestresst in de openingsfase van afgelopen seizoen. De Sauber C35 was geen goede auto en om zijn snelheid en te bewijzen ging Ericsson vaak over de limiet. Door het veranderen van de benadering van een Grand Prix-weekend is de Zweed naar eigen zeggen mentaal sterker geworden.

De wijziging van aanpak wierp al snel zijn vruchten af. In de kwalificaties was Ericsson zijn teamgenoot Felipe Nasr te snel af en ook in de races waarin beide heren finishten was Ericsson de sterkere: "Het lukte me afgelopen seizoen steeds beter om goed een weekend door te komen. Richtte ik vroeger vooral op de trainingen, nu ligt de focus meer op de kwalificatie. Ik weet in de trainingen nu goede referentiepunten te pakken en daarmee weet ik op welke momenten ik snel moet zijn. Ik begrijp nu ook veel beter hoe het afstellen van een Formule 1-auto werkt en de feedback die ik geef aan engineers zorgt er bijna altijd voor dat ik me beter voel in de auto."

Ook laat Ericsson weten dat hij beter om kan gaan met het maken van eigen fouten. In het verleden worstelde de Zweed het hele weekend wanneer er iets niet goed ging: "Ik weet nu dat niet alles in een vrije training hoeft te gebeuren. Wanneer de auto niet naar je zin is heb je nog de mogelijkheid dat voor de kwalificatie te veranderen. Ik bouw de weekenden nu veel beter op en dat zorgt ervoor dat ik afgelopen jaar goede zaterdagen en zondagen kende."

Nasr liet in t begin leuke dingen zien , ik zag ericsson altijd als de mindere , tot afgelopen seizoen
