Jerome D'Ambrosio genoemd als tweede rijder bij Virgin voor 2011

Eerder kon F1Today.nl al melden dat Timo Glock ook in 2011 bij Virgin Racing zal rijden, dit vertelde teambaas John Booth namelijk. De Brit vertelde nog 'een optie' te hebben op Lucas di Grassi, maar ondertussen wordt ook Jerome D'Ambrosio genoemd als tweede coureur bij Virgin.

D'Ambrosio werd in 2007 kampioen in de Formula Master en maakte daarna de overstap naar de GP2 Series waarin hij in Monaco dit jaar zijn eerste overwinning scoorde. Geruchten linken de Belg aan een stoeltje bij Virgin Racing, al dan niet als onderdeel van een eventuele motorendeal tussen Virgin en Renault. D'Ambrosio rijdt dit jaar namelijk in de GP2 bij DAMS, het juniorteam van Renault.

Virgin-teambaas wijst de geruchten over de komst van D'Ambrosio echter weer de prullenbak in. "Jerome helpt ons alleen nadat Andy Soucek het team heeft verlaten. Hij is onze reserverijder omdat hij over een superlicentie beschikt. Dat is alles." Ook over een overstap naar Renault-motoren was Booth duidelijk: "We blijven gewoon bij Cosworth."
