Licht aan het eind van de tunnel voor Silverstone

De British Racing Drivers' Club ziet de toekomst van de Britse Grand Prix op Silverstone niet somber in. Eerder gaf BRDC-president John Grant aan dat de Formule 1-race een financiële strop voor het circuit vormt en dat ze overwegen om de ontsnappingsclausule te activeren. In dat geval raakt Silverstone de Grand Prix van Groot-Brittannië na 2019 kwijt.

BRDC-voorzitter Derek Warwick nuanceert dat na overleg met nieuwe Formule 1-eigenaar Liberty en de Britse overheid. Op de Autosport International Show verklaarde hij: "We hebben rond de Kerst een bericht naar onze leden gestuurd met een update over Silverstone. Dat is in de pers terecht gekomen en de nadruk lag steeds op het activeren van de ontsnappingsclausule."

"Maak je geen zorgen, de Britse Grand Prix vindt hoe dan ook de komende drie jaar op Silverstone plaats, tot en met 2019. Ik heb het gevoel dat we niet zonder de Grand Prix van Groot-Brittannië en niet zonder Silverstone kunnen. We moeten dus een compromis sluiten. Met Bernie Ecclestone of met de mensen van de nieuwe eigenaar Liberty Media."

"We hebben gesproken met Liberty en Formule 1-voorzitter Chase Carey. Hij toonde begrip voor ons dilemma. Wij snappen dat hij geld moet verdienen voor zijn werkgever. Er is licht aan het eind van de tunnel, we zullen ook na 2019 Grands Prix organiseren. We praten met de overheid om te zien of daar wat mogelijk is. Zelfs Bernie heeft ons gebeld om een afspraak te maken."
