Mateschitz tegen Vettel: "Rood staat je niet"

Red Bull-baas Dietrich Mateschitz is benieuwd wat zijn renstallen komend seizoen in de Formule 1 kunnen laten zien. Voor hoofdmacht Red Bull Racing is het doel om het gat naar Mercedes te dichten, voor opleidingsteam Scuderia Toro Rosso ligt een rol in de middenmoot in het verschiet. 2017 zou weleens een goed jaar kunnen worden voor de Red Bull-teams.

Mateschitz vertelde aan Speed Week: "Renault heeft voor 2016 nieuwe ambitieuze en capabele mensen aangetrokken en met de hulp van Mario Illien betaalde zich dat op de baan uit. Ik reken er voor komend seizoen op dat we motorisch gezien nog sterker voor de dag komen en in de buurt kunnen komen van Mercedes. We willen halverwege het seizoen de aansluiting vinden."

"Dat wil zeggen dat we gedurende het komende jaar naar het niveau van Mercedes toe willen groeien om mee te strijden om de overwinningen. Wat het chassis betreft vormen wij reeds de maatstaf. Ferrari is de grote onbekende. En wat onze coureurs betreft, met Daniel Ricciardo en Max Verstappen hebben we op dat vlak niets te klagen. Onze line-up is een grote plus."

"Scuderia Toro Rosso krijgt het moeilijk om Force India en Williams voorbij te stevenen. Ze zullen zich samen met McLaren op de zesde plaats moeten richten. Carlos Sainz heeft zich sterk ontwikkeld. Aan Daniil Kvyat zijn we meer vertrouwen verschuldigd. Pierre Gasly zal voor beide teams als derde rijder fungeren en veel werk verzetten in de simulator."

Hij is niet door Mercedes benaderd voor Ricciardo of Verstappen. "Helmut Marko en Niki Lauda hebben het daar wel gekscherend over gehad, puur voor de lol. Iedereen weet dat onze coureurs niet beschikbaar zouden zijn voor het stoeltje dat Nico Rosberg achter heeft gelaten. Geen van onze rijders heeft zich ook bij mij gemeld met een verzoek voor toestemming voor een transfer."

Mateschitz praat soms nog met oude oogappel Sebastian Vettel, tegenwoordig in dienst van Ferrari. "Ja, af en toe, wanneer ik een Grand Prix bezoek of een van ons de ander belt. Dat beperkt zich echter altijd tot smalltalk. Ik zeg hem altijd dat rood hem niet staat."

Laat MB maar de topfavoriet zijn, vanuit de underdog positie beginnen levert minder druk.

  Ja idd! En als je dan een McLaren en een Ferrari hoog van de toren hoort blazen, die moeten echt nu presteren! Red Bull schaart zich nu 2e en denkt een half jaar nodig te hebben om de definitieve aansluiting te hebben, maar dat zou ook zo maar is gelijk kunnen gebeuren.
